Very cheap spot sale on Coeh Brother collection…

Probably just for this morning, Amazon is selling The Coen Brothers Movie Collection, $50 MSRP, for $20.  It includes five of their best films, including Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, Raising Arizona (great flick), Barton Fink and Blood Simple.  Even aside from their more recent work, that’s a great filmography right there. 14 uniformly 5 star reviews for the set from Amazon buyers. Even if you own some of these, this would be a great gift for someone who doesn’t.

  • Thanks!

I actually have all of those films except Blood Simple , but for twenty bucks, I couldn’t resist. That’s less than Amazon Marketplace has used copies of BS for.

  • Where’s the Hudsucker Proxy? Can’t a Hudsucker get a little attention from the cineastes of the world? And Raising Arizona is still their best film.

I know it’s postmodern fluff, but “The Big Lebowski” is not in that collection yet it contains great moments like:

I think Millers Crossing might be one of the most underrated movies of the last 20 years. Every time it’s on, I can’t turn it off. And even after seeing it 20 or so times, I still find something new in it. Just amazing.

  • To fully appreciate Miller’s Crossing, you need to see Los Doulos, by the great French gangster auteur Jean-Pierre Melville. I wouldn’t call MC a remake of that film, but it clearly is the Coens’ riff on it. Sadly, it’s not out on DVD yet, but I can’t imagine Criterion won’t get around to it someday.

Miller’s Crossing is one of my all-time favorite films. Like bt, I’ve probably seen it 20 times, and still marvel at it.

  • “Coeh” brothers? In the title? When you know your Minister of Proofreading is now reading your blog?

  • Er…well…uhm…I thought it would be nice to make you feel needed.

Yeah, that’s it. That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.
