IT HAS BEGUN!!!!

[UPDATED]:  American Gladiators, now a network show (!!), kicked off last night on NBC.  I was watching The Amazing Race and didn’t notice.  However, “Round 2” is on tonight.  Sorry I missed the premiere, though.

By the way, with NBC riding a camp wave with this and the soon to return revamped Knight Rider (with GOB Bluth providing KITT’s voice), here’s a completely serious suggestion: have fun with these things, and do an episode of Knight Rider where Michael goes under cover as a contestant following a murder or something on American Gladiators.  I mean, why the hell not?  That would be great!

I seriously hope they don’t try to glum up KR ala The Bionic Woman, because that would be retarded.

[ANOTHER UPDATE]:  Yes, my beloved Mortal Kombat certainly *does* deserve a special edition DVD.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Dammit, I thought there was going to be some story about a DVD release of Mortal Kombat, full of nifty extras, unlike the only DVD of that movie I’ve found so far.
Thanks for crushing my dreams, Mr. Begg, ya cruel bastard.

I thought AG was on last night? I was too busy watching The Amazing Race to flip over, but I thought I saw it in the line-up. Or are they rerunning the premiere?

  • Ericb

It was on last night but it will be on tonight as well.

  • Dave Causey

    AG was fun!

I loved the show back in the day,and I enjoyed the premiere.

I’m hoping we see a bit more personality out of the Gladiators.

    Isn’t Helga scary?

I seriously hope they don’t try to glum up KR

I’m so sick of these re-makes and “re-imaginings” that make everything SO. DAMN. DEPRESSING. I like to think and be challenged, sure. And I sure the hell know that real life ain’t all sunshine and lollipops, so if you’re going to depict “real life”, you need to show the good AND the bad. But for the love of Groucho, Chico, and Harpo, I also like to have fun!

They need to take a page from Heroes…there’s some depressing and dark stuff, but it’s not allowed to overwhelm things. Not only does it keep things from becoming so gruelling, but it makes the dark stuff more shocking.

  • Tork_110

It was cool when I was watching The Phantom and all of a sudden, there was Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the villian. He spoke the same way his Shang Tsung character did.

That was one of the couple things I remember about that film.

Wow. I completely disagree. I like Heroes, but that’s not the example I’d think of when trying to think of a show that keeps things light.

  • The Rev. D.D.

I didn’t mean completely light, that’s what sitcoms are for. Merely an example of a show that knows when to lighten the mood and not let the whole exercise be dragged down into darkness and misery.
Would Chuck have been a better example? It seems like a lighter show, from what I’ve seen of it.

Oh, no, I know what you’re saying. And I still disagree, sorry.

“Would Chuck have been a better example? It seems like a lighter show, from what I’ve seen of it.”

    I’ve never seen it.

  • Caught Round 2 of American Gladiators last night, and you know what? Despite the changes, it made me feel like a kid again. That was some good old fashioned entertainment.

  • Solid Jake

The new American Gladiators lacks the subtetly and nuance of the original.

….man, I never would’ve thought I’d ever say those words.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Between Hulk Hogan mugging it up like he’s been doing for decades and that Wolf guy howling at everyone, I don’t think I’ll be able to watch more than that second episode.
Not that the contestants were much better…a full-of-herself karate instructor and a woman who was a walking, talking after-school special with all the platitudes she spouted after every event…oy. I kept hoping that Hellga chick would punch ’em in the mouth. I like her, all big and meaty and with the giant braids. Like the Swiss Miss’s Scandanavian cousin got into some steriod-laced Twinkies.

  • Yeah, I have to say, I found the show oddly lacked the juice of the original version.
