NBC passes on Wonder Woman series…

It’s hard not to think this is exactly the right decision. That thing looked horrible; hopefully the pilot will show up somewhere, either officially or via bootleg.

Still, it’s more egg on the face for Warners. Other than Chris Nolan’s Batman movies, DC/Warners has had no luck with live action exploitation of their characters, all as Marvel moves from one triumph to the next. You know there’s a lot of praying going on about the upcoming Green Lantern movie, the first film they’ve actually managed to get produced in the wake of the disappointing Superman reboot. Should that tank for some reason–for instance, it could just flat out suck–you have to think heads are going to roll.

Passing on it before it even airs. Ouch. I’m not really surprised, though. There was a lot of bad buzz about it. The costume got wailed on on a few fora I’ve been on (most of the criticism being of the, “I’ve seen better looking Halloween costumes” type), but I’ve heard that they showed the pilot to a test audience, who were less than impressed.

  • Mr. Rational

I’m inclined to think David O. Kelley and his bizarre ideas about what Wonder Woman should be in THIS day and age were behind the ultimate tanking.

And Green Lantern is done before it starts, I think. I didn’t really like the CGI in the trailer…whereas I was mightily impressed with the level of detail in Thor. And I still cannot buy Van Wilder as Hal Jordan.

  • fish eye no miko

Isn’t it “David E. Kelley”? Or am I missing the joke?

  • Foywonder

“the first film they’ve actually managed to get produced in the wake of the disappointing Superman reboot.”

Hold on their, Ken. Are you forgetting about the new Superman reboot titled MAN OF STEEL they’re now producing. Now if that tanks… Well, they’ll still have the BATMAN reboot they’re already planning for a fews years from now once Chis Nolan wraps up his DARK NIGHT trilogy. Yeah, DC is screwed. But I’ll forgive them if they ever give me that WILD DOG movie I’ve been longing for.

  • Well, Man of Steel is still a future project. Again discounting the Nolan Batmans, Green Lantern will be (or am I forgetting something) the first DC live actioner other than the disappointing Superman Returns since Marvel starting eating their theatrical lunch. Apparently the nature of giant corporations (i.e, Warners) is making this process near impossible, and make Marvel look remarkably agile in contrast.

  • Rock Baker

    Well, what did you expect?

I’ve always liked the concept of The Green Lantern, but I no longer have faith that Warners can do anything worthy of their characters unless it involves animated direct-to-video projects (and that’s certainly a crapshoot). After Wonder Woman toning down her Old Glory uniform and now Superman revoking his status as a symbol of American potential, I’ve given up on ANY future DC movies! At least we’ll always have Batman, the Animated Series.

“Apparently the nature of giant corporations (i.e, Warners) is making this process near impossible, and make Marvel look remarkably agile in contrast.”

Don’t be so sure about that either. By all accounts Marvel has already developed a reputation for tinkering as much with their own movie properties as the other studios they supposedly wanted to get away from. Both Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau have all but publicly denounced Iron Man 2 because of Marvel’s creative interference. That’s the main reason Favreau isn’t coming back to make the third. I’m still have a sneaking suspicion that The Avengers is going to be a major letdown if not a total disaster. Too many chefs, too many ingredients. Not sure if even Joss Whedon is creative enough to cook in that kitchen.

But, hey, there’s still the other non-Marvel Marvel movies yet to come. The Amazing Spider-Man reboot that puts Spidey back in high school with more emphasis on the teen romance angle – Spiderlight, anyone? Don’t forget about the highly anticipated Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D from the Crank directors that has Nic Cage riding around Romania working to help the Vatican stop Satan before he claims a mortal child as his earthly vessel. There’s always The Wolverine; that is if they can actually get it underway and the stink from the X-Men Origins: Wolverine hasn’t already doomed it. I wonder if Fox still has their hearts set on rebooting Fantastic Four with a more Dark Knight tone to it like they were talking about a year or two ago. Oh, almost forgot Daredevil is also supposed to be getting a Dark Knight-style redux. Ditto Blade.

Is there any superhero property that can’t be given a Dark Knight makeover? Where’s Pixar’s Dark Knight-styled Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham animated movie? I’d go for that.

  • I knew this show wouldn’t last, but I didn’t think they’d kill it in its infancy. I was hoping to at least see the pilot.

  • Rock Baker

Maybe the studios need to find properties from comic book companies apart from the Big Two and make movies out of those. Dinosaur Girl, the Motion Picture, anyone?

  • Foywonder

“Maybe the studios need to find properties from comic book companies apart from the Big Two and make movies out of those.”

They do. Unfortunately, the results often tend to be even worse. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night and Priest just in the past two weeks.

  • Petoht

“Where’s Pixar’s Dark Knight-styled Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham animated movie? I’d go for that.”

I’d pay to see that. Of course, if they’re going to do that kind of silliness, then I’m gonna start agitating for a Groo the Wanderer movie. Maybe directed by Tarentino, just to make sure it’s completely insane and violent.

  • alex

Christopher Nolan will produce the next Superman movie so chances are it will be good.

As too other properties DC could make into movies I think Sgt. Rock has some real potential if it’s handled properly. Teen Titans could also be really great.

  • PB210

“Maybe the studios need to find properties from comic book companies apart from the Big Two and make movies out of those.”

They used to. Remember Timecop, Helboy, etc.?

  • Rock Baker

A Sgt. Rock movie done right this day and age? I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’d love to see it, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

As to a Nolan Superman, even if he wanted to do the character right, I doubt the owners would let him.

  • Foywonder

I believe super producer Joel Silver has owned the rights to Sgt. Rock Nineties. I remember reading how he wanted Schwarzenegger for the role and then later Bruce Willis’ name was being talked about. Last time I heard anything on the subject was a few years ago when I believe the talk was of setting the movie in the future with Sgt. Rock leading a battle against alien invaders.

  • Grumpy

“…the upcoming Green Lantern movie, the first film they’ve actually managed to get produced in the wake of the disappointing Superman reboot.”

You’re forgetting “Watchmen.” But maybe that was so oddball that it doesn’t count. Ditto “The Losers.”

  • Grumpy

    Oh, and “Jonah Hex.”

  • Grumpy — Point taken on The Watchmen, although it was positioned more as an anti-superhero movie (kind of a big budget version of things like Super or Kick-Ass) than a traditional superhero film. As for The Losers, well, not really the sort of thing I was talking about. Besides, I take my Losers old-school.

  • John Campbell

I’m Priest is good. Haven’t seen it and don’t care what anyone else thinks. Yes I shall form my own opinions!

Stuff that in your cigar and smoke it!

Groo would be the dream movie and yes it must be done by Tarantino!

Sgt. Rock would be incredible as well.

Tank Girl was crapped out sadly.

Why haven’t they done a DC or Marvel flick from the Villain’s perspective?

A Legion of Doom movie. Or “The Joker”.

And how about applying the “Dark Night” treatment to other things like “20,000 leagues under the sea” or “Bambi”?

(Sorry lost it there at the end…)
