Monster of the Day #760

GOT-AAAAH DANCE! [Cue frenetic bongo beat]

If yesterday’s lady looked bored by the the giant spider shenanigans, this one seems positively ecstatic.

  • Flangepart

Siren and spider, the greatest criminal team since Burke and hair.

  • Ken_Begg

The twist, of course, is that she’s Spider and he’s Siren. Like Salt and Pepper.

  • Gamera977

She also looks a little chilly if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Ahhhh Richard Shaver! I assume back from his captivity by the Derros. If you have no idea what I’m talking about look up Shaver Mystery or Shaver Hoax sometime. Modern day conspiracy buffs have nothing on Shaver.

    “See Back Cover”

No, I am never turning this magazine over.

  • Ken_Begg

It does seem a forlorn request. What could possibly be back there that was better?

  • Eric Hinkle

Ah, the Shaver Mystery. I once spoke to some old Lit SF fans who were around when it all went down — it was amazing to see these somewhat elderly men acting as though it’d all been yesterday and boasting about how by driving Ray Palmer from his post at Amazing Stories they’d “saved science fiction”.

  • Gamera977

Oh wow, I’ve only heard about it third-hand from the internet etc. I’d love to have heard from people who were actually there when it all happened. Even from the internet stories I got the impression that many felt Shaver would have been the ruin of SF if he hadn’t been driven out.

  • Eric Hinkle

From my own reading I;d say that it would have been more Palmer and Shaver who “ruined” anything, given that poor Shaver honestly believed what he was saying and Palmer used him for sales.
