Monster of the Day #3713

Zombiewhacker pointed out I had mentioned Monster Squad and Drac Pack, but skipped the Groovy Goolies. Fair enough! While the other two shows featured a team (always, as here, based on Dracula, “Frankenstein” and the Wolf Man) seeking redemption by fighting crime/evil, this was more of Laugh-In inspired barrage of dumb gags, at an insanely quick pace. So fast I found it exhausting. When last I watched the show I was like seven or eight and had just consumed half a box of cane sugar-sweetened Froot Loops. Now I’m an old man, and I’d like it to just stop, please.

Weird origin for this. Again, monsters were popular with kids, adorning cereals even. So this was meant to be the supporting characters to a spin-off of The Archies, featuring star Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Instead, she was really the supporting character. And, of course, the monsters played in band, because nearly EVERY cartoon show then had the characters in a band. Only the Archies had an actual hit, though, with Sugar Sugar.

For what it’s worth, the episodes of Monster Squad are currently on Amazon Prime, while both the full episodes of Drac Pack and Groovy Goolies can be found on YouTube.

Fighting crime is tough, but I guess it's one way to pay off those PUFF bounties.

So was there ever a plot on one of the series where they ran into another team featuring The Mummy, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and The Phantom of the Opera?

  • Eric Hinkle

If not, there should have been.

Ya know you could do a third gang with The Invisible Man, Quasimodo, and The Bride of Frankenstein's Monster as well.

BTW: Just got back from the John Wick spin-off 'Ballerina'. I keep hearing the movie is a massive flop but I found it pretty entertaining. Same thing as the main-line Wick movies, insane fight scenes and ultraviolence. I esp loved the dinner plate fight. And the absurdly over-the-top just plain deranged flamethrower duel!

  • Beckoning Chasm

I hear from a number of sources that the movie is really good. I might have to check this one out.

What was the name of the monster Flintstone family? The Gruesomes?

  • Eric Hinkle

That's what I remember. It felt weird to see classic Universal monsters showing up in Bedrock a few thousand years before they'd even been described in myth and literature!

If you don't want to see it in the theater it's worth streaming in the future IMHO. I don't think it was as good as Wick I or IV but I'd rate it as good as or better than II and III. One thing I really did like is it's not so bloated and over-the-top as IV. It's nice to see something a bit smaller and more personal.

The Gruesomes were more likely a ripoff of The Addams Family than of any GOATs from the Universal Studios stable of old. No vampires, mummies, or werewolves were to be found here, merely stone-aged versions of Gomez and Morticia.

Years later Mr. and Mrs. Gruesome surfaced again as members of the Really Rottens' team on Scooby Doo's All Star Laff-A-Lympics.

Yeah, that's right. I'm forgetting everything these days.
