Jabootu's Bad Movie Dimension

We’ve hit the $200 mark…

Updated on July 11, 2007 By Ken Begg 4 Comments

I’ve gotten a touchingly nice response to our 10th Anniversay tips drive, (such as it is.)  Actually, the nine total tips have hit $230, but Amazon does skim a bit off the top, so currently I’ve due to recieve $202.  (That $28 seems a little high, considering, so I’m going to check into that.)  Hey, Amazon, here’s an idea; offer 5% off if people spend their tips with you rather than transferring them to their bank account.  Just an idea.

Rich, Ericb and Alexander (hey, guys!) are the only people I know have contributed, and Rich is one of our three $50 donators (the other two are currently anonymous), followed by one $30 and five $10’s.  This isn’t a competition, though, and I want everyone to know that I appreciate each and every donation, and sincerely thank anyone would would even think of sending me a buck when they don’t have to.

Since I’ve accumulated a nice little pool of donations, I’m thinking of hoarding the money until November, when Deepdiscountdvd.com is due to hold their next semi-annual (extra) 20% off sale.  That way I could turn the $200 into $240 worth of goods, and maximize everyone’s collective kindness.

Given the flood of stuff coming out in September and October this year, along with the stuff I passed over in the past, I think I can get a nice selection of dreck.  I’ll keep you ‘shareholders’ apprised here on the blog.  Rest assured, though, I will spend every cent we’ve recieved and may yet recieved on films and such for the site.  I’ll pay for my ‘H’ and hookers directly out of my own pocket, have no fear!  (Although it’s getting to be time to think of dumping my old giant monitor–really, the thing’s a beast–in favor of a nice flatscreen.)

Also, there’s this place.  I’ve gotten a disc from them in the past, and it was good stuff.  Not quite commercial grade, of course, but pretty close.  The films are a bit more per title, which is understandable given the rarity of many of these titles, but there is some prime stuff here from an era I just adore.  My wish to maximize the dontations pushes me in the commercial direction, but everyone give this list a look and discuss.   There’s definately some stuff here, like Boom!, that I’m considering, and lots of other juicy titles from a period the studios haven’t really gotten behind yet.  Although I’ve stupidly set myself up so that the next two pieces are black & white ’60s sci-fi, I do intend to get back to the idea of really mixing up the sorts of films I review.

For what it’s worth, this flood of generosity has strenghtened my resolve to get off my can–well, back on my can, technically–and start posting more material again.  I hope to see some progress on that front as soon as this weekend.  Keep an eye out.

So to everyone again, Thank you.

“Although I’ve stupidly set myself up so that the next two pieces are black & white ’60s sci-fi”

But I love those and you really haven’t done one of them in a while.

Thanks! I just really like to mix things up more. Still, only one of the two is a monster flick, so hopefully that helps a little.

This weekend’s piece is pretty minor, hopefully the roundtable piece will be a bit more lively. (And I might pad it out with a side review.) More importantly, an old b-movie hand not formally associated with this site is planning to post his roundtable contribution here, too. This is his first review in a while (and no, sadly, it’s not Apostic or Steve from the now defunct Widescreen Gangrene), and definately *not* a b&w sci-fi piece. So if all works out well, the weekend after this will see three pieces of various lengths going up.

I would love to see you do one of your full length reviews of one of my favorite B-Movies, one that has Jabootu’s fingers all over it, and one that no one has reviewed just yet. “Moontrap”. This lovely little sci-fi B-movie star Walter Koenig and Bruce Campbell. It’s very much a late 80s movie that ended up going direct to video partly because of where the trailer was shown.

I used to have a website for the movie back in the dark ages of the internet, and still have a copy on tape (which is good as it’s still not out on DVD).

Yeah, there ought to be a way to convert Honor System donations into Amazon gift certificates and do away with the transaction fee.
