Stuff…

  • Johnny Depp has been on a nostalgia TV kick lately, currently shooting a Dark Shadows remake, trying to get his ludicrously expensive Lone Ranger movie in production, buying the rights to Carl Kolchak, ect. Now Robert Downey Jr. might be getting in on the act, as Variety announces that Downey is mulling a Perry Mason movie. Luckily, the project apparently is a period piece set in the ’30s, which is a much better idea than a new, hipper modernized Perry. Because really, what would be the point of that?
  • Saw the commercial for Tower Heist, and it looks awful. Too bad, I love me a heist film.
  • Speaking of, the commercials for Rock’em Sock’em Robots the Movie Real Steel have been making my brother and I laugh for weeks, so I was surprised when it scored a 61% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not great, certainly, but better than I would have thought.
  • Some might remember I was scornfully depressed about a one-time possible Edgar Allen Poe mystery series that would have cast a blond pretty boy in the role. That never came about, but John Cusack is starring in The Raven, a far more serious “Poe after a serial killer” movie that hopefully will be something we’d want to see. The trailer, unsurprisingly, makes it seem they were going for a Downey’s Sherlock Holmes / Tim Burtony vibe. Fingers crossed.
  • Consider this an open thread for whatever you guys want to talk about. Any thoughts on the new fall TV shows, for instance?

CBS’s Person of Interest — is not interesting.

American Horror Story pilot was pretty bad. I’ll only watch another week or two likely. The best thing was Coach’s wife from Friday Night Lights.

2 broke girls is horrendous. there are only 2 reasons to watch it, but those with access to google have already seen those spoilers.

‘Terra Nova’ – kinda so-so. Not really that good, nor that bad – just blah. Wonder if FOX will allow it to find it’s footing or kill it after a dozen episodes- so far I don’t really care one way or the other.

‘Rocket City Rednecks’- I’ve seen only six episodes so far and love it. Personally I’d like to see the ‘redneck’ hijinks cut back but it’s IMHO no more goofy than ‘Mythbusters’. Personally I think ‘RCR’ is better than the last couple of seasons of ‘MB’.

‘Monster Makers’ on The Travel Channel. Show about a company that makes props for haunted houses. I assume it’s a seasonal show but liked the first episode.

Anyway that’s my two cents for what little it’s worth.

Since they are the only two new shows I have watched, I will echo the big huzzah for “Red City Rednecks” and a bored meh for “Terra Nova”. The former is really just another Mythbusters-type show, but the redneck family drama is weird and funny. The latter COULD eventually pick up, but has not so far…

I like Terra Nova but do agree on the alow start.

Hillbilly Handfishin’ is some serious good fun! The folks who run Big Fish Adventures are genuine and great, but it’s the people who come to do some noodling (catching cat fish with your bare hand/foot) is the real treasure. Some of them are hands down wet yourself laughing funny.

Other than that I’m nearly thru season 5 of new Doctor Who. And oh man I do NOT like Matt Smith and his wierd frankenstein head.

Mind I understand that’s the nature of the doctor’s regenerations.

I’m a died in the wool tom baker fan and I rank david tenant right up there with him.

Oh!! And I’ve been netflixing “Sons of Guns” oh man I want to work for that guy!! If you are into things that go boom, it’s a kick ass show. Think American Choppers, but it’s guns and the father isn’t a raging douche canoe who’s alienating his children.

    Salut!

A period piece Perry Mason movie? Color me intrigued, but let’s face it, Downey doesn’t have a voice nearly as hypnotic as that of Raymond Burr. Burr’s powerful instrument, I’d argue, is what kept Perry Mason interesting for decades (as otherwise all that legal material on a weekly basis has a real potential for getting dull).

  • Terrahawk

Terra Nova I’m not sure about. I’ve only seen the pilot. I had low expectations watching it and it did do somewhat better than expected. However, you can see seeds of destruction which if allowed to blossom will kill the show by cliche. It was nice though that it seemed to follow being more like Falling Skies than BSG or other more depressing sci-fi.

I know it’s the third season, but I’ve been catching The Middle and finding it to be an enjoyable show.

My only interest in “Real Steel” is that a friend of mine lives in the town where they show a scene outside the county courthouse. Of course the court house in the movie is supposed to be in Texas instead of Michigan where it really is. That might provide one explanation of why movies are so expensive.

I can’t afford cable, and network is mostly boreing.
I watch NCIS because of the characters, after that…Zzzzzz city.
I can’t even get into CASTLE or BIG BANG THEORY. I guess I’m too old for this stuff any more.

Okey, BURN NOTICE is cool, and it hath The Bruce onboard. Like the star, and the informitive voiceovers. Useful stuff, that.

  • John Campbell

I’d like to toss in a correction. After watching the 5th season episode “Vincent and the Doctor” I’m sold on Matt Smith in the role.

No one will ever compare to Tenant, but I see it now.

That is all, you may return to your duties.

  • Tork_110

I’m intrigued by the return of The Flintstones in 2013. I want to see what somebody does with the show in a post-The Simpsons era. The Flintstones was never a bad show, but it is pretty dated.

(I just wish they gave it to someone else instead of the Family Guy guy.)

  • RogerBW

It’s the least inspired slate of new shows I’ve seen for a while. Unforgettable is better than I expected, and Terra Nova’s pilot was at least watchable – but for my money anything Brannon Braga touches turns to dross and technobabble, so I don’t expect it to last in my interest (and given the HuGE budgets it probably won’t get renewed anyway).

But Burn Notice and Castle and Leverage continue to be good. And Lost Girl is still the best show that nobody’s ever heard of.
