DVDS this week (02/09/10)…

Actually, I missed a couple of weeks there. Here’s some stuff to throw on your Netflix lists, get at your local library, or even buy if it strikes your fancy enough.

Lots of vintage TV hitting the shelves.

Doctor Who: Dalek War & Planet of the Daleks. Vintage Jon Pertwee. Whee!

Doctor Who: Remembrance of the Daleks. Sylvester McCoy.

Yay! Tremors the Series hits DVD.

Although rights issues pathetically kept the pilot from being included (way to hang tough, Universal, you sure showed them), I’m excited about the release of the short-lived series Tenspeed and Brown Shoe, with a young Jeff Goldblum at his nerdiest teamed up with gabby conman Ben Vareen. Give it a try.

Like Ultra Man? Iron King looks pretty similar. The Amazon client ratings look pretty good.

Adam 12 S4, The Commish S1, Johnny Bravo S1, Have Gun Will Travel S4, Hell’s Kitchen, Matlock S4, Matt Houston S1, My Three Sons S2, Nurse Jackie S1, Project Runway S6, The Scarecrow and Mrs. King S1 (doesn’t The Scare King and Mrs. Crow sound like a much better show?), Silk Stalkings S1, Superjail S1, Universe S4, Walker Texas Ranger S7 (complete series also now available), Wanted Dead or Alive S2.

The recent Nazi zombie epic Dead Snow hits DVD (and Blu-Ray). Sandy Petersen didn’t think much of it, but then everyone knows he hates zombie movies.

  • The Rev. D.D.

I ran into a copy of the Iron King series back around Christmas in 1/2 Price Books. I was like, “An Ultraman knock-off I’ve never heard of!? How is that even possible??” After my shock wore off, I waited until a had a coupon (who the hell’s gonna buy it but me?), picked it up dirt cheap….and proceeded to not watch it at all.

I did look it up on the ‘net, and found very little information. Despite my intrigue I just haven’t had the time to get into it yet. I need to change that ’cause being reminded of it now has me all interested and excited again.

  • When you do watch it drop up a note and let us know how it was.

  • BeckoningChasm

Johnny Bravo? Seriously, who the hell cares about or even remembers Johnny Bravo. Give us Dexter’s Laboratory, damn it!

In additionl to the titles listed, Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro is also back in print. It’s a kid’s film, but well enough made that adults can watch it too.

  • Maud’dib

I started to put “Pit and the Pendulum” in my queue since I love Poe’s works. But then I started reading the reviews and turns out is simply a T&A homoerotic thriller. The only thing it supposedly has in common with Poe’s story is the title. I’ll pass.

    Woo, Silk Stalkings!

  • The Rev. D.D.

Ken–will do. Maybe by the time you get back I’ll have word on the first episode or two.

A David DeCouteau film is described as “homoerotic”? Getouttahere!

Johnny Bravo…meh, it was all right. Dexter’s Laboratory was definitely better. However, I was much more into the Dial M for Monkey and The Justice Friends segments. Kind of like how I watched Animaniacs! for Pinky and the Brain and Good Idea, Bad Idea.

Oooo, I’ll definitely have to get My Neighbor Totoro. I haven’t seen that in years and know a couple of people who’d no doubt enjoy it too.

  • Rock Baker

I’m not sure Horror Express really qualifies as a vampire movie, or the Vampire Bat from what I can remember of it. Still, there’s a couple there I haven’t seen.
Big Screen Bombshells might be fun, but I’ll be happy if I never, ever, ever, again see Superchick. Worst movie of 1973, even amid some serious competition for that title. Maybe if they’d just picked a direction they wanted the film to go in and actually followed through it might’ve worked. I will say, and I know this is unrelated, Superchick probably had one of the very best one-sheet posters of 1973 -again amid some pretty stiff competition.
You guys are pretty tough on ol’ Johnny Bravo. I offer that the first season had its moments, and I’ll leave it at that for fear of getting hit.

    The Wild Rebels

    o/~ “Wild Rebels/Munchy, crunchy Rebels!” o/~

    The Sidehackers

    o/~ “Side-Hacking is the thing to do/And it doesn’t hurt to have a low IQ…” o/~

    The Bat, The Bat

o/~ “The Bat, The Bat, The Bat is on fire…” o/~
    Ok, I’ll stop…

    Horror Express

If this is the movie I’m thinking of, I liked it up until Telly Savalas showed up. Up until then, it was kind of a typical British horror.mystery movie, then Savalas showed up, and… gyah…

    Old Dogs

Oh, God. Have you ever gone to see a movie more than once, and the same group of trailers plays every time? And there’s one trailer you hate, and you know it’s gonna show up? I had that experience with this film. [eye twitch]

The Rev. D.D. said: “Good Idea, Bad Idea.”

Good Idea: Traveling through time with Doctor Who.
Bad Idea: Traveling though time with Doctor Pibes.

So far, Iron King isn’t too bad. Granted, I have only watched two episodes…

The first two episodes of Iron King follow this pattern: Exposition, fight scene with henchmen, giant monster stuff, plot, fight scene, giant monsters, denouement. The longest scenes are the fight scenes, which are done well enough, I suppose. Surprisingly, henchmen get killed; we’ve had two blatantly run through with swords, and one accidentally caught a crossbow bolt with his back. Still, I’m here for giant monsters, and I like what I am getting but I wish for more of it.

I do like that our main character, despite dressing like a cowboy, is actually a techno-ninja with an ever-increasing bag of tricks. He’s pretty likable. Iron King’s alter ego (this isn’t a spoiler; if you can’t immediately figure out who it is in the first episode, we need to talk), despite being the comic relief, manages to be funny more often than not. The pretty Japanese girl with Indian-style braids is pretty, but is actually not a bad actress and adds some mystery to the plot; there’s hints that she might not be who she claims.

Iron King’s first two opponents have been giant robots; indeed, I think for this first season they all will be. Anyway, first we get Vacu-girah, whose only weapon besides wrestling is a HUGE left hand with a vacuum that can suck or blow. It can suck trees out of the ground (which leaves me wondering how our heroes don’t get sucked up as well) and can blow hard enough to keep Iron King at a distance. The second is Gyro-gesu, who can pull a razor-sharp crescent-shaped boomerang out of nowhere, and can also launch his left hand (USE ROBOT PUNCH!!) and send it to slice or smash. Oddly enough, this hand is normal-sized, but seems to get much larger when launched. I liked him better than Vacu, although he’s goofier-looking.

My only major complaints involve Iron King. While being hydro-powered is a neat touch (and gives ample opportunity for his alter ego to do silly things like try to drink from fire hoses), it’s just another “Ultra-timer” to limit his effectiveness. So far, all he’s done is wrestle and punch. Oh, sure, he’s got the “Iron Kick,” but all that involves is a tumbling routine (comnplete with afterimages–think Johnny Cage’s “Shadow Kick”) culminating in….a flying side kick. It doesn’t seem to be particularly devastating either. The big problem, though, is that in these two episodes, Iron King has not destroyed the giant robots. In the first one, the techno-ninja throws Vacu’s controller at him…and he pulls a Bruce: TR. Gyro-gesu goes pretty much the same way, although I think the techno-ninja also tossed in one of his Atomic Grenades (TM) for good measure.

Oh, and the introduce the third episode’s robot at the end of the second. He’s Double Satan, which is awesome…and then he turns out to be a goofy-looking green and purple robot with horns. Man, what a waste of a great name.

All in all, I’m enjoying it so far! I do look forward to later episodes with proper kaiju, though.
