Order Godzilla DVDs ASAP!!

In a year replete with terrific cult movie DVDs (Brainiac, Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare), one of the best is Classic Media’s swank “Gojira” DVD, which boasts for an extremely reasonable price both the Japanese and heavily altered American cut of the film, commentaries, documentaries, a booklet and one of the nicest packages I’ve ever seen.

Classic has had two more Godzilla DVDs lined up, for the first two sequels, Godzilla Raids Again, and Godzilla vs. Mothra. Both sets will again feature the original Japanese cuts (in Scope, where appropriate), as well as the American dubs. Extras are also included in each set.

These discs were due on Nov 7th, but have been delayed from general release until next spring…

BUT…

The DVDs can still be ordered directly from the site, and they will be mailed out on Nov 7th, months before they hit other venues. Chances are the discs will be even a bit cheaper next spring, but $15 a shot is a very good price. Frankly, I also just want the company to know people are excited about these discs, so they keep on doing more.

  • Oops, I think you’re right! Sadly, that film came out recently (at least in widescreen, unlike the old Simitar disc) on DVD from from Universal, who didn’t do anything like giving us both versions of the film. Which is a shame, as KKvG was probably the film most heavily changed by the American distributors.

  • Universal was most likely more interested in cashing in on “King Kong” than giving Godzilla fans any sort of extras. I’d imagine it’s also one of the Godzilla movies they could get more extras for. For instance, I have an issue of G-Fan with an “interview” conducted with the two titular monsters that was done as promotion for the Japanese version of the film. They could voice that over and package it as an extra.

  • Well, I will say that we’ve perhaps become a little spoiled by companies like Classic Media. Universal did release the film widescreen, in a cheap double set with King Kong Escapes. It was definately a step up from those old Simitar discs.

    That said, now that Universal has made it’s nut, maybe in a few years it will farm the movie out to someone like Classic for a more extras-based package. That would involve some double-dipping, but in this case, I wouldn’t mind it. (Too much.)

  • I just wonder how many of these DVDs Classic Media is going to put out. It’d be nice if they put out the entire G-Series, but I sincerly doubt that will happen.

  • They won’t do it because they don’t have the rights, and the films are owned by a variety of studios. For instance, I think Universal only had King Kong vs. Godzilla, maybe because they owned the King Kong rights at the time.
