T(ween) Fest venue details!!

As regular attendees might know, we will no longer have SMU available as a Fest venue. Angela, better known as The Charming Young Lady Who Brings All the Really Delicious Cookies, offered up a replacement, but it was only available after 5:00 PM, so that didn’t work.

Sandy did dig up a place, though, and here are the details: “The address is 1751 International Pkwy, Suite 115, Richardson TX., 75081.” Sandy further says, “I checked it out yesterday. It is a nice room with a pull-down screen about the size you use for a home movie. There are couches and chairs in abundance. There is also a big-screen TV if we decide to watch re-runs of Jersey Shore instead. We will be able to fit 30 people comfortably, 50 people uncomfortably.”

Obviously that would be more than big enough, especially since presumably we won’t be drawing as many (any?) SMU students anymore.

One note to get the well deserved recriminations started: Mary will not be joining us for the Fest, largely because I failed to provide her the info she needed when it was still ecomonical for her to buy a plane ticket to Dallas. Needless to say, this is a crushing blow for all of us. I’ll do better in July (or August?) when T-Fest rolls around…assuming that much higher gas / fuel prices don’t ground more of us, including myself.

See you in a couple of weeks, guys, on Saturday the 12th. Presumably we will be starting circa 10:00 AM, per normal. Sandy and I are finalizing the line-up now.

  • The Rev.

No Mary?! Boo on you, sir. BOO. ON. YOU.

Also, feel free to answer that email I sent you. Unless, of course, you didn’t get it, in which case I’ll resend it.

I’m kind of snarky today! Sorry to any innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.

Looks like this venue’s a bit closer than SMU was. Maybe I can finally convince one or more family members to tag along for a movie or two.

Did anyone besides Mary (who’s not coming now) have any interest in a pre-Fest get-together in Dallas the Friday night prior, or will those coming in to town that night be too tired? Maybe Sunday following…

  • Reed

While I’m certainly no Mary I will be there with, most likely, another Iron Maiden shirt on. I have quite a large selection of them from which to choose. No Lordy shirts, though (reference the previous “I’m certainly no Mary comment). I would not be able to make a pre-festivity activity on Friday, though.

And Angela, even if they were not able to use your venue, you will bring cookies, right? They may not be the only reason that I come, but they are definitely a nice lagniappe.

  • JazzyJ

Woo-hoo! I will be there. I will even bake some home-made cookies of my own to bring…

No pre-fest gathering for me, though…

  • The Rev.

Aaaaaaaand of course I check my email and Ken responded earlier today. *grumble*

  • I accept brickbats with resigned fatalism. I make no excuse.

  • Aaaaaaaand of course I check my email and Ken responded earlier today. *grumble*

Well, c’mon, you can’t assume something that bizarre happening.

  • Sandy Petersen

The line-up is going to be:

    Legend of the Overfiend
    All Night Long
    La Blue Girl
    Guts of a Beauty
    and
    Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

  • Sandy Petersen

The pre-fest gathering might have a sneak preview of THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS. Just saying.

  • Don’t be fooled, though, it’s the Japanese version of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, with extra tentacle rape.

  • The Rev.

“The pre-fest gathering might have a sneak preview of THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS. Just saying.”

When and where? I’d gladly watch that again.

  • Kirk

Can we have lunch at the same burger place?

  • I assume we’ll get together at Sandy’s house the night before, although I’ll let him yay or nay that officially. I wouldn’t be surprised if people weren’t welcome on Sunday as well. I’ll be staying at his house through Tuesday afternoon, and we’ll be cramming in as much junk cinema as possible during that period.

  • GalaxyJane

While Ken is certainly swift with the mea culpas, I have nothing to blame except my own procrastination for the fact that I’ll not be there this year. Don’t get me started on my opinion of the airline industry right this second though.

Eat a cookie and watch “Dark Floors” in my memory. Actually don’t watch “Dark Floors”, it’ll spend 90 minutes convincing you that it is actually an interesting ghost story with a neat take on temporal paradoxes, then smack you in the face at the last second with the revelation that the writer’s never bothered to figure out what was going on either. Not nearly enough fun for a Fest, although definitely a good end of film swearing generator.

Will miss seeing everyone, look forward to being less last-minute in July/August.

  • Chad R.

Ken, will you be coming to Houston first as is typically your wont?

  • That is my plan. I should be arriving on Wednesday and staying with Kirk and Patty. We’ll be doing our usual Thursday dinner in Houston before heading to Dallas, if you’d like to join us.

  • Chad R.

I will come Thursday if at all possible. I also just booked my hotel so you can’t change the venue now.

  • Sandy Petersen

We are actually much closer to Burger Island than we were last year so at the moment it’s on the agenda. Rich and Angela put in a bid for another, more upscale burger place, so we might have two separate lunch venues, and afterwards fight about which is the best – the aggressively blue-collar Burger Island, or the other, fancier, hand-crafted, white-collar burger joint. I plan to contact Burger Island a couple days in advance with a storm warning, to make sure they have enough clam strips.

  • Yes, the clam strip thing was HIGHLY disappointing.

What’s the name of the new place?

  • Frank Bauroth

The Twisted Root. Great burgers, but I still have not had the clam strips.

  • The Rev.

Twisted Root…I seem to recall them getting a couple of wins in past Dallas Observer “Best of Dallas” awards. I know “Best Root Beer” was on there one time; I dunno about anything else.

Man, that’s gonna be a toughie. Thanks to the generosity of Sandy, I know how damn good BI’s clam strips are, and have lusted for them ever since. I’ve been wanting to hit TR as well, though, and this’d be a perfect time to do so.

  • Reed

There is only 1 solution to this dilemma: 2 meal breaks!

Or maybe we can show movies at one place where people can graze as they wish all day, with a formal meal break to the other place.

    I guess that’s 2 solutions.

  • Kirk

I suggest a rumble. I call “Sharks”, y’all can be the “Jets”.

  • Mr. Rational

I will definitely be there again this year. Unfortunately, my friend Maggie will not be able to make it as she couldn’t get out of work, but y’all will be treated to (or have inflicted upon you) my company, as well as that of my very good friend, Mr. Billy Jack and his Rollicking Awesome T-Shirt.

BTW, anyone know if Dr. Freex is going to be there? If I’d known he was going to be at T-Fest, I would have brought along my copy of “Forever Evil” for him to autograph, and I don’t want to miss a second chance.

  • It didn’t sound like Freeman was going to be making this show. We’re hoping he’ll be there for the main Fest this summer.

  • The Rev.

Well, I might actually get the lady of the house and the stepdaughter out to join us, at least for a little bit. The lure of hamburgers is strong for TLotH. She has been to the downtown Twisted Root and said the food is good, but didn’t like the atmosphere and the servers, so she’s going to vote for BI. Anyway, depending on the movie we watch after dinner, they might stick around for that.

  • Guy Hoyle

Once again, my work schedule is interfering with TweenFest. I teach a class from 9:30-10:30, and again at 2:00 to 4:00. The problem is that my transportation will have to be by cab, since I’m a non-driver. I’ll definitely be there after my 4PM gig, but I’m not sure I can make it between 10:30 and 2.

I’m happy to have even a part-time job in this economy, but I sure hope I get hired on full-time so I don’t have to work weekends.
