Monster of the Day #3621

Another movie I’d never seen. Dino REALLY wanted his own Jaws. Will “Orca” Sampson returns as Crazy Horse (sadly, this is not “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” or, particularly, “Outlaw Josie Wales” Will Sampson) opposite Charles Bronson as Wild Bill Hickok. The titular buffalo looks pleasingly–to me–fake. Jack Warden is solid as always as Hickok’s racist sidekick, Kim Novak (??) has an appearance as–wait for it–a hooker with a heart of gold. Western fans will be glad to see Clint Walker, Stuart Whitman, Slim Whitman, a young Ed Lauter and the great John Carradine pop up, although not to overmuch effect.

Chad R and I were mesmerized by the dialogue, with every sentence cramming in hilariously archaic “authentic” old West slang. Remember Kirk Russell asking if Billy Bob Thorton was going to “pull that smoke wagon?” Imagine slang like that in pretty much every single line of the movie.

Happy Friday, everyone. Off to see the Overlord movie this afternoon. Have a great weekend. Watch something stupid. Watch something stupid with us tonight at the Watch Party.

Finally saw this one about a year ago and remember kind of digging it. It's trying real hard to be Deadwood meets Moby Dick, but just can't keep it's head above all the cheese. I do love the long shots of the buffalo moving through the snow like a locomotive equipped with a snow plow. John Barry's score was pretty good too. Very King Kong. I wonder if scoring this fulfilled some kind of deal with Dino?
