Stock Stuffer Alert

It never hurts to stock up cheapie gift items for the holidays, or birthdays that catch you off guard. Old monster movies are especially good gifts for the young, since (as we all know) that’s when you most easily develop a deep and abiding love for this stuff.

You just can’t go wrong with this DVD, featuring gorgeous presentations of two of my very favorite ’50s monster films for less than five bucks a shot.

If you’re looking for even higher end monster mayhem, Warners offers a double bill of Them! and Beast from 20,000 Fathoms–beat that with a stick–for only $8. (or, for 4.50 more, you can get the Sci-Fi Adventures set that also throws in World Without End and Satellite in the Sky.)

In the mood for something junkier? How about MGM’s fine six of Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (no relation to the Beast, believe me) and Beast with a Million Eyes for $6. Or the tandem of the quite decent Return of Dracula along with The Vampire for $4.50 (!).

Man, I like monster movies.

MGM did manage to rescue some real treats from obscurity, didn’t they. I think I have most of those already.

Them! AND Beast?! Oh MAMA. I’m actually drooling a bit. Not that those other sets aren’t all compelling, but those two are among the best giant monster movies ever.

    Come on, payday…

Return of Dracula/The Vampire is a good one to pick up if you’re looking for something slightly more obscure. Two extrememly nifty vampire pictures (one traditional horror and the other a science fiction treatment of the subject, the best of both worlds) with gorgeous trasfers. (The Vampire is an interesting picture, as much a study in addiction as medical monster mayhem, and Ken Tobey is on hand! Yay!)

I did pick up the single disk double feature World Without End/Satellite in the Sky. Both beautiful widescreen transfers, great pulp science fiction-adventure movies (but rocket scientists might want to stay away). Satellite features a young Lois Maxwell (Miss Moneypenny of the James Bond cycle, and voice of Atlanta Shore on Stingray).
