Holy Crow! Brisco County Jr. for under $20!

Fans squawked when they finally released the wonderful comic western sci-fi series The Adventures of Brisco County Jr, starring Bruce Campbell, on DVD.  (This was the show that was expected to be a huge hit while The X-Files, which premiered the same night, was expected to be off the air shortly thereafter.)  The reason?  Knowing it was wanted by a small but intense bunch of people, they stuck a dizzying $100 MSRP on the set.

However, Deepdiscountdvd is right now, probably until they run out of stock, selling it for only $18.67! I already bought it earlier for a lot more than that, but damn, I’m almost tempted to buy a second set for that price.

They’re selling a lot of other TV stuff too.

    It’s the coming thing!

    Very fancy.

I held off on getting this set as I still have my tapes from the original broadcast, but I’m glad I finally got it. The writers roundtable extra with Carlton and the guys is really fun to watch, they truly seem to like and respect each other and it must have been a blast putting this show together. The plans they had for the second season also seemed to have some real promise. If only…

I never understood why Brisco County Jr wasn’t a big hit. It was always entertaining, and sometimes hilarious, and it starred Bruce Campbell !

Sandra – probably the title of the show. It sounds like a western with a slight touch of goofiness (NB: I never saw the show, maybe that’s just what it is).

I don’t think folks cotton to the idea of a western much these days.

  • BC — That’s exactly what it was. Richard Dean Anderson also had a somewhat similar show called Legend on UPN, and it too died quickly. And I still think that Firefly would have died even if Fox had done every single thing right: It was a space western. Two genres that have never been particularly popular with the public at large.

Titles are very, very important. You want them to draw people in by telling you something about the show.

My own theory is that “Firefly” was doomed with a title like that. Does “Firefly” sound like a space western to anyone? Bueller? If I saw that listed as a title, I’d think it was a sensitive story about teens coming to know themselves at a campground. In other words, blecch.

And when he made the movie, he called it “Serenity.” Again, doesn’t sound like a space western. It sounds like the story of a sensitive young girl learning to accept herself. Blecch again.

(I’d never seen either when the film came out, and was surprised by all these fanboy raves about “I’ve just gotta see this!” Also, it was surprising to learn that “Firefly” was the type of spaceship in the show. Isn’t that a little like calling a police show “Four-door sedan”?)

Joss Whedon really needs to think about his titles. He couldn’t do anything with the title “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and look what happened: a success.

The DVDs are helping me to get the word to the next generation- now I’ve gotten my son into the show. The order of the episodes is different from the broadcast order, though, and this is a case where I prefer the broadcast order so that’s what we’ve been going with. I don’t recall seeing an explanation of why the DVD set has a different order (I’d assume they are going by production order.)
