Stuff…

It looks like the Tim Burton Dark Shadows movie is going to happen, with Johnny Depp indeed playing Barnabas Collins. Nobody does Gothic better than Burton, so I to say this sounds pretty promising, although Barnabas’ origin has already been covered by two different TV shows and an earlier movie.

Rumors (and rumors only) are that John Malkovich is in talks to play the Vulture in the next Spider-Man film. That would be perfect casting, actually.

Rumors also have it that the upcoming Wolf Man remake will be rated R for “for bloody horror, violence and gore.” I’m sure that will thrill the “it’s not horror if it’s PG-13” crowd, but me not so much. I understand why Piranha will carry a very hard R, but am not sure why The Wolf Man needs one.

Sigh. Roland Emmerich is due to personally reap over $100 million dollars due to the success of 2012. His deal included 20% (!) of the first dollar gross (!!!).

Josh Brolin reportedly may replace Tommy Lee Jones in another Men in Black movie. Yeah, that’s a good idea.

Alright, I’ll bite. Why will Piranha carry a hard R?

  • well I sadly am of the opinion that many horror movies were crippled by going for an R instead of a mighty NC-17.

  • Well, like the first one (also an R), it was about a vast swarm of piranha eating tons and tons of people. I guess you could make a PG-13 film like that (and I wouldn’t personally object), but making it R makes sense. It would be like making a PG-13 slasher movie.

The Wolf Man, not so much. That should be more of a mood flick. I’m not saying you can’t make a really good R rated wolf man movie, because you can do anything if the execution is right. However, my suspicion is that it will be gory rather than moody. Hopefully I’m wrong.

In short, Piranha is more naturally more about the kills. I would prefer a Wolf Man movie where that wasnt’ so much the case.

  • Well, Jones is getting up there in years. I guess there is no country for old men in black.

I kind of wish Tim Burton would stop doing remakes. His original stuff is much, much better. Still, wasn’t it his Planet of the Apes that gave us the “reimagining” term? I guess I can’t expect much.

Also it’s kind of hard to hide the blood when kills are made in the water, assuming it’s the blood that jacks the rating up to R.

  • No, Piranha should be quite gory, even more so in 3-D. It’s being directed by the helmer of High Tension, after all.

Ya know, I actually like the Burton and Depp combo, but… I kinda wish Burton would use other leading men sometimes.

The Vulture? When the hell are they finally gonna have the Lizard? Unless this is gonna be another multi-villain movie. Cuz that worked so well for Spidey 3.

Re: MiB: I hope they make it a different character rather than Brolin trying to pretend to be Jones.

  • Hasimir Fenring

How about just not making another MiB sequel at all–wait, what am I saying? That’s ludicrous. I mean, these are the people who made a Dumb and Dumber prequel without either of the original film’s stars.

  • I think Raimi kind of boxed himself in with his apparent drive to have ‘sympathetic’ villains. Both the Green Goblin and Doc Ock in the movies were scientists driven mad by their experiments. It may be that the Lizard was considered too much an iteration of that theme again.

Is ANY new Men in Black movie a good idea, no matter who is in it? Number two was, well, a pile of number two.

That said, while I love Josh Brolin as an actor, no one should replace Tommy Lee Jones — nobody!

As I recall, Raimi even tried to make Sandman a sympathetic villain with all that “I did it for my sick daughter” thing.

“I think Raimi kind of boxed himself in with his apparent drive to have ’sympathetic’ villains. Both the Green Goblin and Doc Ock in the movies were scientists driven mad by their experiments. It may be that the Lizard was considered too much an iteration of that theme again.”

I wish it had occurred to him before he applied it to Sandman and totally failed to make him menacing. Actually, I’m pretty sure he hasn’t ruled out using the Lizard, but if he’s going to use two villains I want to see at least one be irredeemably evil this time, ie. more so than his half-hearted attempt at Venom. It’d be awesome if he could get Michael Clarke Duncan to play the Kingpin again.

  • That would be great. (Although Daredevil is currently owned by 21th Century Fox, so the rights to Kingdom presumably are theirs as well.) And the Vulture was always kind of a dick at the very least, so that would work, too.

I keep hearing Morbius’ name pop up–for several of the movies, now, so maybe he’s not really on Raimi’s radar–but again, yeesh, he’s a scientist turned into a monster by his experiments. If Raimi really intends to ever use that guy, why did he portray both Green Goblin and Doc Ock in pretty much exactly those same terms?
