Giant Spider Invasion cont; I would buy that book….

Continuing the discussion about the special edition DVD of Giant Spider Invasion that is still (barely) available–or else I was one of a very lucky few to procure one–correspondent Dave Fullem points out this post by Fred Olen Ray on the situation.  Basically, he won his case against GSI director Bill Rebane pretty handily, as Rebane sold Ray’s Retromedia the rights to the film only to have Rebane resell those rights to a company called Synergy, who issued the 2-disc set in question, which has now more or less been pulled from market.

The most interesting sentence is this, from Ray:  “The various letters issued by Respondent (that’s Rebane) during the course of this were/are, in my humblest opinion, weird and outlandish and would easily make an interesting book of their own… in fact we might publish them since I am told that I am the legal owner of correspondence sent to me. ”

I’ve never given a rat’s ass about celebrity’s personal lives, but I find the nuts and bolts of the weird exploitation market sort of fascinating (and kind of like law stuff), and I’d love to read a book like this. Here’s hoping Mr. Ray follows through with this idea.

Oh I agree, this would make good reading. Strangely enough, Rebane is interviewed on the Retro Media disc and comes across as (at the very least) a sane individual. He even admits that the film should be called the “Giant Spider Disaster,” and talks about the problems of the Giant Spider prop. Then Fred says this little nugget of info…

“When asked for payment of the money the court has ordered him to pay Rebane laughed and told our attorney “good luck getting it”. Maybe he has experience at ripping people off and getting away with it. Check out the bankruptcies of his former companies if you have any doubts.

Can you believe he’s actually tried to run for Governor of Wisconsin?”

Seriously, a book has to be written about this!

Just to clarify, the quote from Fred comes from the article that Ken has the link to. It does not appear on the Giant Spider Invasion disc, even though I mistakenly worded it in a way that makes it sound like does. My fault!

I emailed Fred and got this reply!!!

I have no reason to be shy about what’s going on. We are crafting a
lawsuit against Synergy at this time and have already put Amazon on
notice as well after I successfully purchased an offending copy from
them last week as evidence. Expect the title to disappear from their
    site very shortly.

MVD wisely backed off their release, but Synergy basically dared us to
do our worst… which is just what they’ll get.

As I’ve said before, I’ve already fought this battle once and won.
Everyone else who follows is just a matter of mopping up.

I have been offered access to a 35mm print of the film which I may make
a deal for and release a 16×9 anamorphic edition soon.
