We Are What We Buy, April 2009 edition…

Despite the fact that I’m done exactly (this is a technical term) Jack Shit here last month, you guys have VERY kindly continued to use our Amazon links. Indeed, due to a couple of very big purchases, I gleaned well above normal this month, about $90. This, frankly, is an obscene amount based on how much content I added. Therefore, to my extreme regret, it’s clear that I will have to get on my fat ass and get some writing done. So watch for some actual, you know, REVIEWS and stuff this month.

Seriously, I was feeling pretty punk over the last month or so, as a case of flu became a cold which became another bout of bronchitis. The odd thing is that each is more insidious than the last, but in inverse ration to how grossly (a term I use advisedly) ill they made me feel.

Anyway, thanks again, guys, and let’s see what people bought this month.

On the book front, people continue to display a wide array of interests. There were no duplicate sales of any book this month—of any item at all, actually—unless you count the monster Dilbert 2.0 hardcover. Someone bought that, and so did I, although my purchase doesn’t count for the site. Still, the book is huge and gorgeous, swank enough that I honestly don’t even know how anybody made any money since I bought it for only $37.
Aside from that, other book purchased include the normal variety of fiction titles, including The Killing Floor (the first Jack Reacher book; enjoy a great series, except for the last book, which sucked mightily), Double Cross by James Patterson, Fantasy Lover (first of another Anita Blake-like supernatural / action / spicy romance series), Lost Souls (another vamp book); Shadowmarch by Tad Williams, The Dragon’s Doom by Ed Greenwood, The Eyes of God by John Marco, and The War of the Flowers, also by Tad Williamson. So fantasy was the flavor of the month.

Non-fiction titles include I’m Just Here for the Food by the Food Network’s ubiquitous Alton Brown, Case Study Houses 1945-1962; The Boomer Bible by RF Laird and The War for America 1775-1783 by Piers Mackesy.

DVDs sold include American Dad Vol 4, the Angel complete series box I spotlighted (hope you like it!), Vol 1 & 2 of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Robocop on Blu-Ray, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the third season of The Venture Bros. (yay!), and Carpenter’s The Thing on Blu-Ray.

Music included four CDs by The Mekons, which maybe perhaps were ordered by the same person, and one by The Pogues.

Then for the electronics. One kind soul stopped by before buying a clip-on light, but the big ticket items that not only paid for my bandwidth and Netflix this month but for my Dilbert book were the REALLY kind souls who purchased a Kindle 2 (I’ve only heard good things, so hopefully you enjoy it) and a ASUS notebook computer.

So thanks, everybody. I really do appreciate it. Hopefully I’ll be repaying your kindness in a more concrete fashion throughout the month of May.

I didn’t know you had an Amazon clickthrough. I’ll have to share my purchases with you and another website, but I’m happy to do so. Where is it, or am I blind?

  • Sadly, the site designer has been too busy to reconfigure our front page for a permanently placed one. However, there should always be one or two product links evident on the blog page. Just click anywhere in the box EXCEPT where it say ‘buy item’–unless you actually want to buy the item. (Actually, even if you do, it just puts the item in your cart, and you can remove it.)

Having thus been redirected to Amazon, anything you buy during that excursion counts for us. I appreciate you thinking of us.

Long time lurker (since Ken’s world of awful movie days) here…

I’ll cop to the the netbook, Venture Bros., and pretentious book o’ architecture. Thanks for ten (plus) years of fine lousy film scholarship.

BTW, if anyone else is considering picking up Venture Bros. Season 3, the Blu-Ray version comes with a CD of J. G. Thirlwell’s brilliant soundtrack.

Oh heck, I bought a Kindle but didn’t do so through this site. Sorry about that.

For the record, the Kindle is pretty damned awesome.

Don’t feel bad Ken – the old stuff on this site is well worth rereading.

Just try to stay well and add stuff when you can.
