Bargain for Zorro and serial enthusiasts…

DVDPacific is selling the Zorro Cliffhanger Collection for $8.65.  (It’s suggested retail is $30.)  It contains three full serials.  This kind of thing is a great stocking stuffer as the holiday season approaches.  If I’m thinking of the right one, then Zorro’s Fighting Legion is quite goofy and worth the price alone.

I’m sure the quality is average at best, but again, three full serials for under $10?  Gold, baby.

Zorro’s Fighting Legion was the first serial I ever saw from start to finish. It’s pretty awesome.

Also, Deep Discount has all three Flash Gordon serials for less than $15:

You can also download a number of serials legally from internet movie archives. I watched Radar Men From the Moon and it was a blast, in a goofy sort of way. The main character is called Commando Cody, for cripes sakes. You can also get Zorro’s Fighting Legion.

  • You certainly get the bang for your buck with these collections.

I actually think more people might like serials if they watched them like, well, serials. Don’t try to burn through 10-15 chapters in one or two goes, but spread them out. Because they can be pretty repetitive back to back.

  • Zorro’s Black Whip rocked. Or maybe it’s just that Linda Stirling as the Black Whip rocked. She outshoots and outwhips the bad guys many times over. Even rescues the dumb ass federal agent a few times.

Ah, serials. I still have quite a few to go through when I bought a big box of 12 serials at Big Lots for about $20. The earlier serials are not as good as the later ones. Earlier ones are usually in rough shape and, for some reason, lack a musical score even during action scenes. You don’t realize how important a score is until it ain’t there.

Of all of them, I recommend The Phantom Empire with Gene Autry in his first starring role. Autry is co-owner of Radio Ranch from which he broadcasts a daily radio program. Evil scientists discover valuable radium on the ranch and frame Autry with the death of his partner to force him to lose the ranch. Autry must dodge police while returning to the ranch to sing cowboy songs to maintain his radio contract and not lose the ranch. Meanwhile, the underground city of Murania with it’s super science also wants to dispose of Autry so that their location can remain a secret from the surface world.

Any plot description that suddenly brings in an underground city filled with “robits” and such simply has to be seen to believe.
