What the freakin’ hell…

OK, everybody loved Casino Royale, the film that stripped down the Bond movies back down to their essential elements and returned the series to its glory days.

Having done that, it now seems, according to star Daniel Craig, that they’ve decided to completely screw the pooch with the next one.  From an interview with The Daily Express:

“[The producers] just want more gags.  The next one’s going to be a lot funnier.  Octopussy and Pussy Galore-style gags.  They’re all great names.  But that’s the thing, the Bond jokes will be flipped on their heads.”

Craig also opines that, “To me, [Bond] has never been macho.”  He wants to get in touch with Bond’s softer side.

For the absolutely motherfreakin’ love of Pete.  Hey, how about more CGI.  That’d work, too.

Uh, wasn’t the stripping down the reason for Casino’s success in the first place? It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, here’s an idea! Let’s go back to the formula that nearly killed the franchise!” “Yeah, that’s the ticket!”

  • My sentiments exactly.

Good grief, Octopussy made me give up on the series in the first place.

I liked Casino Royale, but to me, one of the weaknesses was that Daniel Craig played Bond as too sensitive. (Like pretty much everyone who’s ever watched Bond, I’m a fan of Sean Connery’s steely portrayal.) So am I to understand we get more comedy yet more emo Bond? This is going to go well.

Also, hasn’t this exact same report been conducted before? I have a feeling Pierce Brosnan said nearly the same thing before the release of “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

  • Yeah, I’m hoping the producers are humoring Craig and telling him what he wants to hear, since I think he’s always been worried about, you know, Bond’s whole…Bond-ishness.

Ken said: “Craig also opines that, ‘To me, [Bond] has never been macho.’.”

    … [blink, blink]
    What.

I’m hoping this is a joke. Surely it MUST be a joke- Daniel Craig taking the piss.

Although in terms of box office reciepts the franchise was doing pretty well with the jokey formula- despite all the criticism one could lay at Die Another Day it turned a decent profit if I recall. That was why I found it surprsing that the producers decided to tinker with the formula for Casino Royale. It almost seemed like they cared more about making a decent movie as opposed to milking the formula for more cash. Seemed a little odd but I’m not complaining.

Maybe they should put in a Special Appearance by Robin Williams, too! That’s always been what James Bond needs.

despite all the criticism one could lay at Die Another Day it turned a decent profit if I recall.

I’m looking at Wikipedia, and before Casino Royale, Die Another Day had the highest total box office take at $456 Million. Another surprising heavy hitter is the widely disparaged Moonraker, which took in $210 Million with 85.1 Million receipts.

Maybe it’s just the typicall pattern for new Bonds. Start off with the serious movie (Dr. No, Live and Let Die, GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and just go more light-hearted from there.
