Monster of the Day #692

Hard to get more Gothic than this. Blacula was pretty close, but the whole ‘black Dracula’ thing still injected a very modern note into things. This is one of those films (Warlock is one of the best of them) exploring how Evil can exploit a society that’s too ‘sophisticated’ to believe in Evil anymore.

I will say the classically ’70s endings to both Yorga films are in retrospect pretty lame (along with yet again the climax to Deathmaster), if only because they were so utterly predictable. As I’ve noted in the past, Night of the Living Dead shattered all the horror movies rules. Then, in the resultant void of freedom, overnight  a new, less satisfying set of rules was erected in its place.

“You Bast@&d, I told you- NO STARCH IN THE CAPE!”

    Agroy-The dislexic vampire.

  • Yeah, the endings of both films fell pretty flat. Otherwise, though, not bad as 70’s vampire movies go. Part of AIP’s effort to mold Robert Quarry into the next Vincent Price (which is ironic, as the one thing I don’t think Price ever did was a vampire movie*).

(* I can’t think of one, anyway. Anyone know of one that I’m overlooking? In that Muppet Show episode, there was a skit where Kermit was discussing vampire movies with Price as if he’d made several.)

I think the second ending is just entirely thudding because it basically just repeats the ending of the first film. Seems kind of pointless.

Price played a vampire in The Monster Club.

Reminds me, we really need to do a Kolchak week sometime.

    Monster of the Days #389-393.

Never got around to Cathy Lee Crosby, though.

Yowza. I an’t help but wonder…what monster is worthy of MOD 1000?
    You is gettin’ there, Kenneth.

Should we have a vote or somethin’ about who gets the big 1000?

  • Ah! I haven’t caught that one yet, thanks for the lead!

Oh YouTube! May your wondrous splendor never fade!

Ken, shame on you. You, more than anyone else, should appreciate the fact that you can NEVER get enough Kolchak.
As punishment, you must now watch the new Kolchak.
