Weather woes continue…

As I noted, when folks (admittedly people from far warmer climes) came in for B-Fest two weeks ago, and complained about the temps (say, low 30s in the days, low 20s or high teens at night), I kind of laughed.  Last weekend, less than seven days after that, showed why.

Things are just starting to get better, but the last week has been the worst extended cold snap Chicago has seen in over a 100 years.  Meanwhile, my travails continue.

Although it eventully warmed up enough for my car engine to start after two or three days of it being just dead, my gearbox was locked in park.  However, it appears that is also cold related, and while the extended 10 day forecast (for what that’s worth) shows nothing much above the mid-twenties for highs–and we’ve several days away from that heat wave–neither will we be seeing (hopefully) the sort of radical, sub-zero overnight plunges we’ve been getting for the last week.  So at least, as it stands, it looks like I’ll have a functioning car.  Worse case, I’ll have to run it for a while before shifting out of park.  By next week even that shouldn’t be necessary.

Meanwhile, my water pipes in my trailer continue to be frozen.  Since we’ve no sign of temps in the 30s anytime soon, I have no idea when this will change.  And then there’s the good chance that the pipes broke, and will have to be shut down anyway until I get a plumber over here to eat up whatever small amount of savings I have.

Until then I’ll be shifting between nights at my waterless abode, and hanging out at Paul and Holly’s and their functioning shower system.  I’ll try to get back into the swing of actually writing and posting articles (although I’m sure I’ve already screwed my B-Fest diary by waiting so long to write it), but frankly I’m pretty distracted these days.

This is especially lame after taking off half a year, and I really, really appreciate anyone still hanging around for the patience they’ve shown with the site.  (Apologies especially to Chris M. for reorienting the site only to have me do nothing with it for this extended period.)  I’m not sure when I’ll back in the swing of things, but when I do, I hope to push out a pretty good stream of material to make up for things.

Man, don’t worry about us. Cripes, stuff happens. It’s not like you planned all of this in your diabolical lair in order to make fewer posts. Anyone here who doesn’t appreciate what you do shouldn’t be coming to this site in the first place. I just hope that things work out for the best for you.

Hang in there Ken! I wish you were here in Texas. I think I can speak for everybody when I say that we understand the delay.

I appreciate the support, Songino, but I also appreciate the fact that *anyone* bothered to hang around during my extended vacation (or at anytime, frankly), and wanted folks to know that I *really* do intend to get back in the saddle once all this crap clears up.

Obviously spending only some night in my own place until I get the pipes going (or worse and longer, need to have them fixed) is going to slow me down, but I fully expect that by the end of the month at the latest (and I *will* make the late Feb bad sequel roundtable, by hook or by crook) I will start pumping out a lot more material, both on the blog and on terms of reviews.

    Thanks again everybody!

I’m out in Deerfield, Ken. I lived through it too. Don’t worry, I’m still waiting to see your next extravaganze of biting wit.

Hang in there, Ken. One of these days my plan to incrementally raise the temperature of the earth in order to make your home beachfront property in a tropical paradise will pay off (if that meddling Al Gore doesn’t stop me first!) … until then, don’t you dare apologize for taking care of real life problems. It’s enough to hear you pop in now and then to let us know you’re alive.

If there’s anything I can do to help, let me know.

I live in LaSalle, IL about 80 miles away from you and this weather is making me wish global warming was real!

  • I know what the movie is! I know what the movie is! Nyeh nyeh!

Ken, I know it’s kinda late to say it, but three words “electric heat tape”. You do have my deepest sympathy for your plight. We have subzero weather here in Montana, but as I recall from my winter at NTC Great Lakes, the cold in Chicago feels worse.

No worries, Ken. We’ll be waiting. :)

  • No worries. The true disciples of Jabootu will stick with ya through thick, thin and freezing COLD! I hope to make it to a B-Fest one of these years. Maybe when I win the lottery or finally give up nursing for a more lucrative career as a drug smuggler. ;) Take care and know we’re all thinking of ya. (C’mon down to Florida, man. It’s in the 70s here today.)
