I wish they would just issue a “Complete Series” set. Or even a “Season 1” “Season 2” kind of thing. Releasing just a few at a time makes it far too expensive to own. The fact that you can stream all of these episodes on Netflix can’t be helping their revenue stream.

No yay for Devil Fish? That was one of the better SFC episodes, and MAN that movie is a hoot.

Now, to send this link to those who need to get me something for my upcoming birthday…

Reed, copyright issues prevent full season sets. Some episodes will never see legal releases on video. At this point Shout Factory is simply releasing the episodes they can get the movie rights to, a pretty slow process.

I understand the old Muppet Babies show has been kept from release for the same reason. And I remember tuning in just to see what movie clips they would show!

  • To me the weirdest case of this is the Chris Isaac show from the ’90s. Astoundingly, even that late, the producers failed to secure ongoing rights to the music during production. Isaac has said he’d donate his rights for free to see the show out, but apparently the program had a ton of guest stars, and securing the rights at this late date is prohibitive.

I think the worst manifestation of this is the fact that It Came From Hollywood and Invasion Earth! The Aliens are Here! are nearly forgotten because there’s no way they can be released on DVD now that everyone is so rights-happy in the entertainment field. You know how long its been since I’ve seen either?!

For what it’s worth Shout Factory recently got the rights to the Gamera films shown on MST3K and the next boxed set will have the 5 Gamera episides.

Oops, not the next set but the one that comes out after Vol. XX which will be released in March.

  • Rock Baker

The Gamera set will definetely be on the wish list!

I usually wait until birthdays and Christmas to try to get a set. However, if that Gamera set does indeed make it to print, I’m forgoing that and buying that puppy ASAP. I lamented for years not immediately jumping on the one with Godzilla vs. Megalon when they pulled it. (Thankfully, I managed to get ahold of a copy last year.) I’ll not make that mistake again.
