Amazon Deal of the Day: Complete Rumpole

They don’t make actors like Leo McKern anymore, bless him. And he found his juiciest part as Horace Rumpole, a droll, cynical yet passionate defense barrister. This set offers all 43 episodes of the show on 15 discs, plus extras. One of the best courtroom series ever. Today the set is $35, 66% off the MSRP of $100.

I wish I could get away with calling my wife “She who must be Obeyed!”

Agree with your comments about McKern, but I have to say that the series owes as much to the original John Mortimer stories and scripts as to their perfect casting. I was crushed by Mr. Mortimer’s passing last year and glad that he continued cranking out Rumpole stories until the end. Admittedly, without the late great Mr. McKern, I see no effective way to ever bring those last dozen-odd stories to the screen.

I wish I’d paid this price for the sets (grumble).

  • Actually, with McKern and Mortimer deceased, I thought this would be a good time to reimagine the show. I’m thinking move the setting to LA, hire David E. Kelly, veteran of many fine legal shows, to run the program, and maybe, oh, Matthew McConaughey as Rumpole? You’d probably want to ditch that part about him being married, though.

As a lawyer, I can definitively say that Rumpole was the hero of myself and many other students coming throught the system.

His battles with the Mad Bull were hysterical.

I would also strongly recommend reading ‘A Voyage Around My Father’ by John Mortimer about his earlier life.
