DEAL OVER

Now we’re talking.  I’ve mentioned before that I was waiting years for this Boris Karloff-hosted crime / horror anthology series to hit DVD.  It finally did, recently, only with a staggering $150 MSRP for the two seasons complete.  Even with discounts it would run you a c-note.

Today Amazon is selling it for a rather more reasonable$56.  Still a lot, but it’s for 2 seasons, about 56 hours (67 episodes) of programming, on 14 discs.  Moreover, the set is stuff with extras like nearly 30 (!) commentaries and such.  So at 63% off list, it’s at least a reasonable price.  Music fans will like the isolated music tracks for some episodes from composers like Jerry Goldsmith.

Favorite Amazon review:  This guy, “Recommended only for the selfish people who love Karloff blindly since they won’t listen to any objection if they’re in love with crappy old anthologies or simply looking for past, stuffy nostalgia.”  The rest of his review, which basically amounts to ‘I don’t like old TV, and if you do, you suck,’ is equally hilarious.  How does liking stuff like this make you “selfish”?! Anyway, the entire ‘review’ is like that.

I rented this from netflix and listened to the commentaries. They’re pretty fun and I learned a lot about 1960s tv.

I’ve never seen it, and am tempted to just buy it, but how does it compare/contrast with other anthology shows, such as Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Night Gallery, Alfred Hitchcock, etc?

Each of the shows mentioned has some very strong elements, as well as some weaknesses (TZ was often overly sentimental, OL episodes were simply too long I maintain).

    Anyone?

  • Did you take a look at that reviewer’s profile? It’s a laugh riot. ‘A woman’s body is like a tunnel waiting to be explored by fungus.’ I wasn’t aware that fungi engage in exploration, but I do appreciate his comparing himself to them.

He is also a professor at only age 28–in Europe, yet! That’s pretty impressive, considering you don’t usually earn the professor title at a European university before age 50. Why a professor is ‘attending the university’ rather than teaching and researching at it is a bit confusing, though. I probably just don’t get it because I haven’t yet realised that ‘dreams, thoughts and delusions are no less real than the “outside” world’. (!)

It’s on the want list, but it will probably be a while before I can pick it up. In the meantime, happily, I still have The Veil…

The best episodes of Thriller are available for free on Google Video. Frankly for every good episode they had five boring ones (and I’m being generous here). As with Outer Limits this show has not aged well.

BTW I agree completely with BeckonigChasm on TZ and OL. I think the nostalgia factor fogs the judgment of most people when it comes to these anthology shows. They had good concepts but the execution was rarely sucessfull.

Huh. Amusingly, I just finished watching an episode of this very show. The brain trust behind WCIU is all shades of brilliant. I loves me some Sunday Night Noir.

Sadly, I had to leave for work halfway through Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Just ordered my copy. Thanks for the heads-up, Ken.

I read that negative review, just for a laugh.
