Sale over!

As I’ve noted on these (metaphorical) pages before, I have a fairly big Sherlock Holmes fan.  I’ve read the Canon several times, read tons of pastiches, and seen a lot of adaptations.

In any case, Amazon today is offering a couple of pretty good deals on what would be considered by most the essential film and TV adaptations.

$97 (58% off the $230 MSRP) gets you the complete Granada TV series featuring Jeremy Brett is what is likely to remain the definitive screen Holmes for our lifetimes. That buys you 12 discs and over 40 hours of the best Holmes adaptations ever.

A little more old school in your tastes? How about the entire set of 14 Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce movies? This is a reissue of several previous (and much more expensive, alas, since I bought them) set where the films were beautifully remastered. Now you can own all 14 for $60, again 58% off the $130 MSRP.

    [sigh]
Man… if I had $100 to spare, I’d totally get the Brett box set.

I would like to just point out that if you don’t have the cash to drop, the fantabulous Brett series is also available for free on Netflix on Demand. Well, “free” if you are already paying Netflix.

When I was in London about 10 years ago visiting my baby sister, we ended up on Baker street and instead of touring the actual Holmes museum, which cost money, we went to the Jeremy Brett museum across the street for free. And, I suspect, got at least as much enjoyment and Sherlock Holmes history out of it.
