Movies in Chicago: Mole People, Nazi Zombies, and, oh, yeah, Godzilla…

If anyone ever wants to advertise some b-movie thing in their town, just send me a note, and I’ll post it for all to see.  For us local Chicago folk, here’s some upcoming items:

Triple (or even quadruple) films at the Portage on Saturday, June 26th, starting at 3:00 with a matinee showing of Bert I. Gordon’s enjoyable schlockfest The Magic Sword, available as a separate feature for $5.00.  Starting at 6:30, then, for $10.00 (a ten dollar ticket also gains you entry to Magic Sword if you want to hang around or grab dinner between the shows) you’ll be treated to

The Mole People 6:30
Revenge of the Creature 8:00
Werewolf of London 9:40

Details on the theater here.

Meanwhile, it’s hard to believe, but the 4th of July is just around the corner.  And in Chicago, that means one thing (well, it means a lot of things, but go with me here):  G-Fest.  G, as in Godzilla.  The best part is that they show actually Godzilla movies in the original Japanese (subtitled) at the beautiful classic Pickwick Theater, which is literally across the street from the library I work at.  This year’s showings are:

Thursday, July 2nd, 10:30 PM:  Godzilla, Mothra, Ghidrah Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Friday, July 3rd, 10:30 PM: The Mysterians
and then a late-night Saturday double bill:
10:30 PM: Monster X Strikes Back  Attack of the G8 Summit Yes, it’s the American premiere of the film that brought Guilala the Giant Chicken Monster, the star of The X From Outer Space, back to the big screen.
12:00 Midnight:  Godzilla vs. the Thing The fourth Godzilla movie where he takes on Mothra for the first time.

Good stuff!!!  Details for the movies and the con itself here.

Finally, on July 17th-23rd, the Music Box Theatre will be screening Dead Snow, the latest and more amazingly, reportedly very good Nazi Zombie movie.  (Better than Zombie Lake?!  I know!)  Correspondent Marsden sends this link.

  • The Rev. D.D.

The true test for Dead Snow will be how it matches up to Shock Waves.

Man, you sure get a lot of good stuff in Chicago.

  • For decades I lamented how Chicago had crap in b-movie terms, even compared to towns like Milwaukee and Columbus, Ohio. The last few years it’s definitely turned around, though.

  • The Rev. D.D.

It occurs to me I’ve only ever been to one G-Fest, and that was almost 15 years ago. I should try to get there for that in 2010.

    Along with a B-Fest finally.

  • You can crash at my place if you do. Rough accommodations (well, EXTREMELY cluttered ones), but you’d be more than welcome. But I’m about fifteen minutes from the hotels were the Fest is usually held, and the Pickwick is again right across the street from where I work. I’ll buy you a SuperDawg.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Your entirely too generous offer will be remembered, Mr. Begg. If we weren’t already planning a trip home to see the family I’d consider trying to get up there this year.

    It’s been years since I had a Superdawg…

Which Godzilla movie is it where he kicks alien butt, then does a little dance?

  • Eriicb

The would be Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. I’m not sure what the Japanese title is which is the title it’s currently marketed as.

  • The Rev. D.D.

Invasion of Astro-Monster. That’s the title on the ClassicMedia DVD release, which also contains the American version (Godzilla vs. Monster Zero).

  • jason hyde

I’ve skipped G-Fest for the last couple of years, but I might just go this year. After all, I’ve got Friday off, and I need to do something with it.

Might also make it to the Portage on Saturday.

  • I haven’t gone to the actual con for a while, and sadly have missed the movies too the last two years for various reasons. That’s my favorite part, though, so I’ll be hitting all four of them this year, even Thursday’s, although that will mean not getting much sleep before work on Friday.

I’m probably going to be at the Portage for Mole People on, so if you go, Jason, look for the morbidly obese fellow with glasses and a Curly Howard haircut.
