Monster of the Day #3640

Sorry, computer issues plus getting up a bit late, so no MotD yesterday.

Friday’s Watch Party was sparsely attended. I hope it’s because people were busy for holiday stuff (like Gamera) but I know the problems we’ve had with Kast (since Amazon dropped their Watch Party feature) have chased people off. Or maybe it’s just dying a natural death. We’ll see.

Anyway, Jane, Bear and Dorothy and I watched Atomic Submarine, a charmingly cheap ’50s monster flick with some surprisingly grisly deaths. Because of Kast my comments weren’t seen by the others for like 40 minutes (I saw them, so I didn’t know). I restarted the whole thing with a new link and then it worked. Let’s hope that’s not a regular issue.

Anyway, a week from Friday we’ll try again.

  • I didn't show because I had a rough couple of days and decided to go to bed early. My mistake, it seems, as I haven't seen this particular gem yet.

Well, shoot, I am pretty sure I've not seen this. Was it on Prime? If so, I'll give it a look ASAP. I should set a reminder for myself for next time so I don't just have it slip my mind. I was busy but not so busy I couldn't have paused for movie time. Mea culpa.

  • Kirk Draut

I was helping Patty and Samatha set up for a K-Pop event, so I had to miss last week.

Does this cyclops guy know the Trollenberg Terror guy? I mean if they are both trying to take over the world and can't see eye to eye, there could be trouble.

  • Ken_Begg

It's still on Prime, obviously. I would give it a look. I kind of love movies that reach too far for their budget.

  • Ken_Begg

They both dates the Cyclops, so…awkward!

Sad I missed the watch party guys. I watched 'The Atomic Submarine' Sunday evening. I'm not sure there was that much riffable stuff in the film though.

Yeah, some people would complain that the entire cast were white, but then that's pretty common in movies of this vintage. And that there is no attempt to peacefully contact the alien. But it's blowing up ships and killing people left and right, I think it made things pretty clear it wasn't friendly.

Only real problems I had was that using stock footage and models of the Tiger Shark the boat's appearance keeps changing. But it's pretty common in movies of this vintage so no complaints. And I'm not sure some of the dialog was correct. I've never been in the Navy but I think you say 'Launch Torpedoes and never Fire Torpedoes'.

My only big issue was the pointless conflict between the first officer and Dr. Neilson. I assume it was out of some scriptwriters handbook that you have to throw in some sort of inter-party friction no matter how pointless or tepid.

Well, the "entire cast" was like half a dozen people–a bit more than that, but not much, who knew you needed so many people to run a nuclear sub. And yeah, that arguing subplot was there just to pad out the run time and man, it got old fast.

  • Gamera977

    Good points Ken.
