When Titans Clash!!

Good grief, DC/Warners just pushed back the release date of their Green Lantern movie from December of 2010 to June 17, 2011. What’s the big deal?

Spider-Man 4 (Sony) May 6, 2011
Thor (Marvel Studios) May 20, 2011
Captain America: The First Avenger July 22, 2011

Starting to get a little crowded there.

At least it will have a month to itself, poor Thor will probably be crushed by Spiderman.

  • I can’t see any way that a Thor movie could possibly be good. He has a costume goofy even by comic book standards, and having him run around int he modern world will give the screenwriters an irresistable urge to have “funny” jokes about how an ancient thunder god doesn’t fit in. I can sense a hip sidekick on his way even now.

  • The X-Men have goofy costumes too, so they changed them. Since they hired Branagh to direct the movie, I assume it takes place (largely, anyway) in Asgard, giving it more of a Lord of the Rings sort of flavor. That way they can introduce Loki as the villain and have him behind the events that give rise to the formation of The Avengers, which is what actually happened in the comics. Even if they decide to skip so that Loki thing, though, with Thor so established, they can bring him to Midgard to interact with Iron Man, Cap, etc, and in a film busy enough that they can largely lay off the fish out of water stuff.

And really, as part of a group that consists of a green giant, a guy dressed in a skin tight American flag outfit and a guy in a metal suit a guy merely dressed as a Norse god will probably generate the least attention.

“Since they hired Branagh to direct the movie, I assume it takes place (largely, anyway) in Asgard”

Well sure, that makes se … huh?

How do you get from “hiring Branagh” to “therefore must be set in Asgard”?

I’d hazard to guess that since Branagh, as a director, is moslty known for his Shakespeare adaptations that the producers chose him because they wanted to set the film in a mannered, archaic setting rather than, say, modern day New York or L.A.

  • What he said.

  • Reed

I personally hope that they resist the urge to make the character “human” and “accessible” by sticking to an origin where Thor starts out as mild mannered Dr. Blake and instead concentrate on a more “Return of the King” feel where Frodo can lay waste to the entire army of Mordor with lightning and a throw of his mighty hammer.

Loki will definitely be the main bad guy. For one thing, he’s about the only choice that anyone will recognize. After all, Thor is never beaten by force, he is generally tricked into doing something stupid because he’s a big meathead. If they want to add some sex they can do a love-triangle thing with The Enchantress, Thor, and Sif. Or, you know, a whole orgy with as many Valkyr as they can fit on screen. The Swedish *$#@ing team. Whatever works.

At the end to bring it into the “real” the Frost Giants (Loki’s ken, after all) could invade New York City, and Thor could decide to hang out on Midgard after saving the planet.

Bonus points if they show Ymir breaking Iron Man with one hit.

I’ve read very little of the movie will be set in modern times. it’s most all going to be in asgard, starting out with thor being warriorishly badass and needful of humility.
that seems to match what they’re shooting for with captain america, too. it’s supposed to be totally set in wwII.
of course, all of this is website conjecture. we won’t know until the workprints are leaked onlin…. errr.. the movies open in theaters.

  • I’m not denying that it would be possible to have a highly entertaining movie set to Norse Mythology. But I must admit if that is the goal, why bother with the idiotic Marvel hero, and just set it in the REAL Asgard. I mean, what the heck?

Perhaps they’re hoping for an opening day bump from comic fans? Not really sure.

I guess the reason is that want a separate movie for each Avenger before releasing the Avengers, but I’m not sure that’s the best plan. I mean, they’ve tried twice now with the Hulk, and still can’t manage.

However, looking at the dates, maybe they’re hoping to have Thor ride on Spider-Man 4’s coattails. Using Spidey to whet the appetite for superheroes (“Damn, that was good, I want another!”) and hoping that combined with fanboys gives Thor the bump it needs to actually succeed. And then, maybe, hoping this continues down the line to the Cap (who has an even worse batting average than the Hulk).

I think it’s a pretty big gamble, though. Especially considering the lukewarm reception SM3 got.
