Watch Party Mea Culpa / Next WP a week from Friday

First, my sincere apologies to everyone, but especially the Rev, who was hosting that night and put through a lot of stress due to my incompetence. Lesson(s) learned: Amazon not only drops movies overnight (well, duh), but they might only offer films for three or six months. Those Cannon martial arts movies hadn’t been on Prime that long, and I checked the day before (sadly, on the last day of the month), and they were there. The night of the WP, not so much. Then Prime’s weird tendency to have multiple links for a single film threw me further–because I had waited too long to check in–so that causes more issues. Finally, though, we found the right link and, better later than ever, got the show running. Again, sorry everyone, and in particular Rev. I will do better.

The movie was Boy and the Pirate, a (at times weirdly violent) kiddie film made by Bert I Gordon, starring his young daughter Susan. No giants, but there was a (oddly well composited) little genie that was taken directly from Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. Weird film, but I have a soft stop for kids’ films made by cult directors, like Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Magic Land of Mother Goose or (GalaxyJane’s favorite) Jimmy the Wonder Boy. So when we finally got running everything was fine.

Amazon has added a pop of Blaxploitation flicks, so I might show one of those a week from Friday. Anyone who has qualms about that, which would be fine, speak up between now and then, either here or email me privately at ken@jabootu.com. That genre has about every kind of problematic content you can think of, and if nothing else, I can see all the extremely raw racial invective throwing people. This is especially for regulars who invite comparative neophytes (including younger people) to attend. So let me know.

  • That one hurt. Gordon’s a better film maker than that, usually.

  • The Rev.

Dude, it really wasn’t a big deal. We’re good. Things happen, and we got it all sorted out. Although honestly I’m not sure that movie was worth the effort. I tend to like these sorts of kiddie films (hell, Gordon’s The Magic Sword is a favorite despite its obvious flaws), but this one just didn’t do much for me. I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t exactly igniting my interest throughout. I did like that the genie was clearly malevolent, though.

I like to think I do not suffer from FOMO, but I got anxious there for 5 minutes. No biggie Ken.

  • Jimmy the Boy Wonder remains the only film that ever just plain broke me. Thanks for bringing up my personal torment , I think I might be triggered or something.

It was a decent enough movie. I did find it funny to run a kid-friendly version of a psychopath like Blackbeard. Kinda like a G-rated Charles Manson. I guess you have to go with the most famous pirate though rather than a somewhat nicer (as long as you’re not Spanish) and less insane privateer like Sir Walter Raleigh.

  • Eric Hinkle

I’ve seen the film myself and I will say, a kiddie-friendly Blackbeard feels a little odd.

At least it wasn’t a kid-friendly Francois L’Ollonais or (going beyond pirates) Genghis Khan or the like.
