Good Chow…

Some extremely news regarding Seth Rogan’s (!) long-gestating Green Hornet project.  Rogan would play the Hornet, and thus presumably the project would be partly comedic in tone.  Fair enough, it’s not like the Green Hornet is a major figure.  Although they should beware the lousy results of films like The Shadow and (gack) Doc Savage Man of Bronze.

However, the film’s stock just shot up like crazy with the news (hopefully true) that action auteur Stephen Chow is not only going to play Kato, but will direct the movie.  Personally, I think Kung Fu Hustle is about the best, most delirously joyful film of the last ten years at least.  Have you ever seen a movie that made you laugh out of a pure love of cinema?  I did when he introduced the Axe Gang through a dance montage.

Although I fear Chow being constrained by American studio types (look at poor John Woo), if he’s allowed to cut loose this could a great movie.

Trivia Note:  The Green Hornet is the grandson of the Lone Ranger.  Really.

Some of my earliest childhood memories revolve around the short lived Green Hornet TV show from the 60s. When I was 3-4 years old I had some kind of Kato obsession and walked around all day in a Kato mask.

That’s hedging your news, all right…

I know that superheroes / masked crime fighters can be funny, but every time I hear about how someone’s doing a “funny superhero” film I just want to say, “Good idea. Skip Batman and go right to the critical and financial success of Batman and Robin.”

  • John, that’s why I’m reassured about the hiring of Chow to direct. Joel Schumacher, he ain’t.
