Monster of the Day #3268

So Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein went from this…

to this…..

Both versions are good, actually. The former is pulpy and often surprisingly gruesome. The latter is very much a gentle kid’s comic, closer in tone to The Munsters than The Addams Family. Still, a truly weird shift in tones.

Interesting that it’s the same artist, too. And yeah, in the second pic, that is a really high nose. It’s like a forehead zit that breathes.

  • Now this is just me, but were I to make a playful take off on Boris Karloff’s stage name, I wouldn’t have gone for Karload. I’d do Bors Karlaff, Boris Kartoff or something to that effect. It hits the right notes and isn’t a random play on words.

Yeah, was Frankenstein trying to create an aquatic monster? The nose looks more like a porpoise blowhole than a nose.

I had to know more about this guy, and after reading his wikipedia page I think the humorous cover above is actually OLDER (note it’s #11)! His first horror version was a different series from around 1940 but then he did the humorous version for 17 issues post-war but then brought the horror version back with issue 18! I think I need to read some of these!
