Not Monster of the Day #16

We’ve had a “classics” slot for several years now, and as long as we have I’ve been meaning to show The Third Man. Ironically, I don’t really want to talk about it because maybe one or two of you haven’t seen it. If you haven’t…do so. It’s a legitimately great film. It’s often heralded as the greatest British film and I’d have to think it’s easily among the top 50 films of all time. Watch it in a nice dark room, as it’s got some of the best black and white cinematography you’ve ever seen. It’s an amazing film, exactly the sort of thing that makes me mourn the loss of revival houses.

The zither scared me away the first time I had a chance to catch the film. I got over it. Never got over the guitar in "Mesa of the Lost Women".

Well, one is a score for the ages, and the other…isn't. Although I now want to see Mesa of Lost Women scored with the Harry Lime Theme. To the AI!

Jackie Coogan is the poor man's Orson Welles.

Truly one of the greats. Should be noted that there were two versions of the film, the original longer British cut (narrated by director Carol Reed) and the shorter US cut (narrated by Joseph Cotten.) Only the British version is available on DVD/Bluray, though the US edit may sometimes pop up on commercial TV.
