Monster of the Day #3699

We followed Zontar with the less well know (oddly), The Black Zoo. It’s about (duh) a murderous zookeeper, and it’s one of Herman Cohen’s English films. So if guessed that the murderous zookeeper was played to icy perfection by Michael Gough, and that his character has a troubled teen character he keeps under his thumb, well, two points to you.

I had never seen this one, but it was unsurprisingly pretty entertaining. As you can see, there’s a gorilla that quite coincidentally looks a lot like Konga, and there’s a radical animal rights group that acts like a Satanic cult.

Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds about right. Anyway, it was nice to scratch this one off the “hadn’t seen” list. Thanks to Chad R for providing the copy.

Was this made at the same time as Konga?

Elisha Cooke as a nervous zookeeper? How did I miss this?

  • Every time I think I might know all the Old School Horror Flicks another one pops up,

Konga was made about two years earlier.

It keeps you going, right? And, I mean, this one isn't totally obscure; it's a Cohen film, and it stars Gough and have Cook Jr in it.

This one was pretty all right, but man, that cult sequence was hilarious. It's basically a less-entertaining (to me, anyway) version of Murders in the Zoo. Lionel Atwell is great in the lead — although there's nothing wrong with Gough — but it gives the viewer more murder and mayhem, including a couple of those stunts they did back in the day that leave you legitimately worried someone was about to die, one involving an alligator pond and the other a quite sizable python.

That gorilla suit sure does look like Konga. I thought it was Konga until I read the description. I guess they had fewer man-eating plants in this one.

Wow, this one is on YouTube though it's in Italian. Google translate works fine though for throwing up subtitles, somehow watching Gough rant and scream in Italian is even more amusing than his normal English accent!
