Stuff (06/19/08)….

Cool! Time After Time will get a new, improved DVD edition on 9/2, with a low $14.97 SRP—meaning we’re talking roughly ten or twelve bones—which is set to include anamorphic widescreen video and, very, very cool, an audio commentary with director Nicholas Meyer and star Malcolm McDowell.

Fans of the Dar-ster will be glad to hear that there will be one, bargain priced set for the TV show The Beastmaster. The Complete Collection will offer all three seasons on 18 discs. If I remember correctly, Marc Singer eventually joined the cast of the show. It’s out in August.

Signs o’ the Apocalypse; or, Sentences I Had Never Hoped to Read: “Robin Williams has signed on to the upcoming comedy WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, which was written and will be directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. ”

By the way, see if you can see my nomination for Understatement of the Year, followed by the “Sir, We’ll have to agree to disagree” moment: “Williams will play a failed writer teaching poetry at the high school. When his teenage son dies during a freak masturbation accident, he tries to cover up the embarrassment by claiming the death was a suicide. When the father’s faked suicide note gets attention, he decides to fake an entire journal to get his writing career off the ground. While the teaming of the comedy stars behind SHAKES THE CLOWN and PATCH ADAMS might seem painful, it actually sounds like a pretty funny concept.”

Pleasant…dreams……HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

No, it sounds like a terrible, terrible nightmare. I bet the only laughs will be small, rueful snorts when one’s opinion is asked afterward.

Nice about Time after Time. A fun movie with only one “hated it” moment, it’ll be good to get it in a nice format. I have the laserdisk (cough) which has a distinct, distracting wobble in the soundtrack in the upper frequencies.

Hey, if you can’t laugh at teenage death. . .

  • Jason Leisemann

A pretty funny concept… about a man who’s so embarrassed by his *son’s* accidental death that he tries to make it look like a *suicide*?

While I can guess where your ‘understatement’ and ‘disagreement’ are, I’m wondering if anybody can guess where *my* increasingly irritable facial tics started.

I’m assuming when the two words “robin” and “williams” appeared next to each other.

Has Robin Williams ever made a funny comedy? He’s made half a dozen good to great dramas (and many more awful ones), but really, ever even one really good intentional comedy?

  • Roger H

I only saw part of it but, Mrs. Doubtfire seemed like passable comedy. Being Robin Williams though kept me from concentrating or sitting through all of it.

He is better at the Drama, Insomnia is good, I had my doubts since Pacino is another tiresome over actor. I do recommend the original Norwegian/Swedish Insomnia, it works better.

  • Jason Leisemann

Hmm… Aladdin? You *could* call that a Robin Williams comedy.

If you could ignore everything dealing with the Ebil Voting Machine Company, Man of the Year wasn’t too terribly bad… wish they’d focused more on ‘fish out of water trying to get something done’ and less on ‘must… have… VILLAIN! Preferably a capitalist one….’

However, mention of a Scandinavian Insomnia intrigues me. Hopefully I can find one in English (or, at least, subtitled.)

What?? Mr. Williams subjecting himself to the “direction” of Bob Goldthwait sounds like sweet sweet justice to me. *eg* I hope they get a lot of B-roll because the resulting documentary should play like “Heart of Darkness”.

  • BeckoningChasm

Wasn’t Robin Williams in Shakes the Clown?

  • Chad R.

He was. He had an uncredited cameo as the mime instructor, I believe.

    … I can’t unread that!! ARGH!!!

BTW, Cinematic Titanic, made by many of the alumni of MST3k, just released their second DVD! [dances]

“When his teenage son dies during a freak masturbation accident, he tries to cover up the embarrassment by claiming the death was a suicide.”

True fact: This sctually happened to a kid a friend of mine told to go kill himself the day before. (I’d explain, but this is a family site!). It *did* lead to a funny story, albeit an extremely morbid one centering around the song “Free Bird”, but Colin didn’t proceed to exploit the kid’s death for financial gain.

I don’t see much inherent humor in the concept, though. Even ignoring the taste issue.

“When the father’s faked suicide note gets attention, he decides to fake an entire journal to get his writing career off the ground.”

I don’t understand this logic. How would writing a book and saying it was someone else’s jump start your writing career?

Great news about “Time After Time.” A very good movie, with a great price. And commentary too. By the way, the bus scene in “Star Trek IV,” when Spock knocks out the punk with the ghetto blaster, was first written for but cut from “Time”. “Hill Street Blues” had a similar scene in a fabulous episode, where Officer Lucy Bates, undercover as a bus driver, forcibly ejects a punk who’s smoking and playing a loud radio.

Robin Williams doesn’t come off as funny any more. Just check out “RV”. On second thought, don’t bother. I did like “Mrs. Doubtfire” when I watched it years ago. But since my own divorce, my opinion of it has changed a lot. I became a lot more sympathetic toward his character, who loved his kids, and got ripped a new one by the judge. The rest of the movie is way too PC for me.

That Robin Williams movies synopsis is a late April Fool’s joke, right? No one would really make a movie with such a lame, tasteless premise, would they? Please?

Netflix has (or had anyway) the original Insomnia. It’s pretty good. The American remake is not bad either, despite the participation of Mr. Williams.
