The first segment of the first Treehouse of Horrors parodied the Amityville Horror, the third was a read of The Raven by James Earl Jones. The second story, however, introduced Kang and Kodos (initially joined by a rare third alien), who have functioned as the mascots of the yearly Halloween episodes. The first one was a riff on To Serve Mankind.
