Good news and bad news…

I’ve got tickets for the probable first Cubs play-off date…but unfortunately they’re to see Bill Cosby in concert.  Oh, well.   Hopefully it will be a night game, and I can see both the Cos and the Cubs.  I doubt it, though.  I’ll have to have Paul or my brother TIVO it.

I’m jumping the gun a little bit, especially since we’re talking the Cubs here.  Still, with yesterday’s win and the concurrent Brewers loss, our magic number fell to 4, with a combined 13 games remaining.  That makes the odds pretty good for us, although frankly I’d like to just win at least four of our last six games–the Cubs are off today, then play through Sunday–and not even have to worry about what the Brewers do.  However, if the Brew Crew loses tonight,  you can put a fork in them.

This doesn’t happen very often for us Cubs fans, but we’ve spent a ton of money lately, and will have new owners by next year.  Given the other cities represented in the National League Central, there’s no reason the Cubs shouldn’t be considered an automatic, favored candiate to win the division each and every year.  Maybe we’ll finally become that team.

In the meantime, our bats are booming (we scored something like 30 runs in the last three games), and our pitching continues to be strong, especially our immaculate relief corps.  The guy taking the greatest bashing, Ryan Dempster, in no way deserves it, and has been a money closer all year.

I don’t know how far into October we’ll be playing ball, but it  would be like the Cubs to win the World Series *one year* before hitting the century mark for the sport’s longest arid streak.  In any case, here’s to a fun ride.

And maybe next year you’ll have A Rod as player/partial owner of the team.

  • I doubt it. I suppose it’s possible the new owners will decide to make literally the biggest splash possible, but that would mean we’d have the second biggest payroll in baseball. And with huge contracts already lined up for years to come–Soriano seven more years after this!–and probably a billion dollars’ worth of debt to service, I’m not sure that an additional $30 million per year is on the plate.

And although AROD is a great player, for that money we could get another pair of great starting pitchers. So again, unless just making a huge splash is their only goal and they have gigantically deep pockets, this seems unlikely.

Is it time to just get over this whole J Lo/K Fed/ A Rod thing? AROD is the worst- it sounds like such a pejorative.

“Damn man, sometimes you a such an A Rod!!”

    *g*

    I was just being lazy.

Sorry, didn’t mean you personally! It’s that whole phenomenon…

The Arod-to-the-Cubs deal is a bluff by Arod’s agent, Scott Boras, to drive up his market value. MLB already prohibits players from having any ownership or planned ownership of teams. Steinbrenner had already consulted with Bud Selig about the legality of it within 24 hours of the rumor’s appearance. So he’s not gonna be fooled.

  • Yeah, Food’s got the gist of it. It’s wildly improbable, even for a rumor.

  • The Cubs could make a splash. The only players of note that are free agents are Cliff Floyd (if he opts out) or Jason Kendall (take it from an A’s fan, him leaving is a good thing).
If I had to guess, I think they’ll try to sign Andruw Jones or Torii Hunter.
