This weekend on TCM…

Fire up the DVD burner or Tivo or whatever you got.  All times CST.

Friday Dec 10th

10:30 PM The Man Who Came To Dinner Classic comedy about an obnoxious fellow who trips and makes himself a most unwelcome house guest. Great cast of character actors.
1:00 AM Santa Claus! The Jabootu classic, brought up from Mexico with dubbing courtesy of K. Gordon Murray.  It’s actually funnier straight than on MST3K.
2:45 5000 Fingers of Dr. T. The incredible Dr. Seuss live-action movie. Sweet!
After that there are a series of fun-looking shorts, so you may want to set your recorder to run long.

Saturday

Noon The Baron of Arizona Vincent Price plays a conman who tries to lay claim to all of Arizona. This actually happened.
1:45 PM The Thing from Another World The best sci-fi monster movie ever? Certainly a contender.

Sunday
9:15 AM Shop Around the Corner James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan are hostile co-workers who don’t realize they are each other’s romantic pen pal. Great supporting cast includes Frank Morgan (the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz) and Joseph Schildkraut. Great holiday movie.
11:00 The Bishop’s Wife Angel Cary Grant comes down to help Bishop David Niven, and comes dangerously close to falling for Niven’s wife. One of my ten favorite Christmas movies.
7:00 Mr. Belvedere Goes to College Before the lame TV show, there was Clifton Webb playing the acerbic Belvedere in a fun movie series.
8:30 Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell

Santa Claus is indeed a hoot, but the MST3K version has one advantage: Tom Servo’s hilarious attempt to give Pitch a theme song.

  • Rock Baker

There were some scenes trimmed from Santa Claus for the MST episode, as is often the case. I’d love to pick up a copy of the uncut film sometime. Right now would be perfect, but alas, no. Why did TCM wait three years after I’d had everything cancelled to start showing stuff like this?

Baron of Arizona sounds interesting too, and with Vincent Price yet! TCM seems to be going out of the way to tax my Christmas cheer!

Ah, Santa Claus and his multi-cultural sweat shop!

Every year we gotta sing the fruity send-off song… no wonder the elves quit!

“ho, ho, hoget down with your bad Santa self”

Netflix has the Santa Claus film for streaming.

As much as I like David Niven and Cary Grant, I always have a problem keeping interested in “The Bishop’s Wife”, not sure why. The film that has moved up my must see Christmas list is “Christmas in Connecticut”. Of course I am a sucker for any Barbara Stanwyck film.

I watched ‘The Baron of Arizona’ couple of months ago on TCM just because Price was in it. Really neat movie, I was going to see if I could find more about the actual event but kept forgetting about it.

And what can I say ‘The Bishop’s Wife’ is a great flick. Kinda scary though- I mean what husband could compete with Cary Grant? And on top of that he’s got holy supernatural powers in this film as well!

  • Santa Claus is indeed a classic and a “must watch” in my home every year. But for true insanity, it’s my traditional Christmas viewing of “Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny” (available on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg64kgKhfys)

Speaking of Santa Claus, if you’ve got $55 you are absolutely desperate to get rid of, you can buy a diorama based on “Santa Clause Conquers the Martians.”

I know it’s not TCM, but I just wanted to toss this out: Anyone that has cable movie network “FLiX” can watch Jabootu classic The Holcroft Covenant on Sunday (12:15 pm EST), next Wednesday (11:35 pm), or Tuesday the 28th (4:05 am).

Soon, another one will be off my list…
