How I spent your money…

Time to inform the stock holders of how I fragrently blew their cash.  As noted, I accumulated, after ‘tip jar’ fees from Amazon and Paypal (although Paypal takes a smaller cut), about five hundred bucks.  Which, again, astounds me, and thanks again to everybody who contributed!

I had basically planned to buy another bunch of movies with those donations, but instead squandered a hunk of it by finally retiring the long-standing debt I’ve owed Techmaster Paul for the site’s bandwidth charges.  I finally have that debt payed off, and put about $200 of the donation money in that direction.

Then my old, dinosaur CRT monitor started flickering in an ominous fashion.  Therefore I used another $200 to finally go ahead and buy a flatscreen monitor.  As long as my hard drive hangs together, I should be good to go on the computer front for a while now.  Fingers crossed.

That left me about a hundred bucks.  I went ahead and went on a DVD-R spending spree, purchasing films that aren’t currently available on the commercial market, and some of which probably never will be.  The remaining funds helped me buy copies of Zabriskie Point, Boom!, Dondi (a film I’ve been waited to see ever since the Medved wrote it up in the original 50 Worst Films of All Time book), and, following my review of The Beach Girls and the Monster, an assortment of Gill Man type movies, most of which I’d never seen.

Those came in last night, purchased from Horror Theater Video.  I gave them a quick gander, and the majority of them offered presentations ranging from servicable to pretty decent.

The exception was the Indian Jaws rip-off Aatank.  Frankly, I think this should have been sold with a warning about a) no subtitles, and b) pretty lousy quality.  I’d call it a three on the ten point scale.   I realize it’s an extremely rare item, but it literally looked to have been duped from a third generation copy of an Indian TV showing, complete with commercials and such.  I must admit, I think it’s pretty much unwatchable.  Given that the DVD-R doesn’t even fast forward that cleanly, I might not even bother to try to cherry pick the killer shark stuff.  Again, a rare item, but the company probably should have been a little more upfront about the presentation issues here.

Things were better from there.  The German Beast in the Lake (aka The Monster of Contanza Lake) is subtitled, and the presentation is just OK (probably a six), but something I can work with.

Destination Inner Space, which I saw as a tot and barely recall, also appeared about a six.  However, the colors were oversaturated, and when I adjusted my set, I put the copy closer to a seven.  It’s like an EP video copy, really.  Certainly watchable.  I suspect Beast in the Lake might look a bit better with the color turned down too, but I haven’t tried it yet.

At about a seven (video tape copy level) is Zaat!, aka The Blood Waters of Dr. Z

Island of the Fish Men (aka Screamers) was probably the best of the lot, a solid eight.  It’s the dubbed English version, but there are foreign subtitles.  It appears to have been ported from an overseas DVD.  Supposedly this version is uncut compared to the American version released here back in the day.

Not a Gill Man movie, the Italian Jaws rip-off Monster Shark looked pretty good, also an eight.

Anyway, that’s where the money went, and I hope nobody is too angry about my spending choices.  I wish more of the money had gone directly into films, but certainly that monitor was something I needed.  I realize using a goodly hunk of the money to retire my bandwith debt is a tad dodgier, but there you go.  I’m also sorry for taking a flier on Aatank, which really wasted ten bucks.  I knew I was rolling the dice on that, and I guess I should have been a little more cautious.

Now, of course, its time to really repay everyone’s generosity by getting some pieces up.  I’ve been very busy with visiting family lately, and watching Cubs games, and the weekend after this I’ll be out of town for about a week to visit Joe “Opposable Thumbs Video” Robin and his wife Tina, and their new baby.  However, I’ll try to get some stuff up before I leave, and will get back to writing upon my return.

Ken I think I speak for everyone when I say any expenditure that keeps the site going is well-spen, whether for bad movies or bandwith.

  • Thanks for the support, as always. I remain a little sheepish about the bandwidth payoff, though.

On the other hand, it’s not like I suffer from a lack of movies already on hand or otherwise available.

I definitely feel that the money is utterly discretionary, as long as it keeps the site up and the reviews coming! I’ve been flat broke (in the red, actually) but now that’s turned around and I plan to contribute to the cause.

    There’s a string attached though.

I want a review of Hawk the Slayer. *g* Just saw it again after many years and what a classic.

    I may do it myself…

  • I still haven’t watched Hawk the Slayer — I *think* I bought the DVD back when, but I’d have to check — but I’ve heard good things. And I haven’t done a fantasy film since Ator…

  • Pip

    Ken!

You got Zabriskie Point! I hope it was everything you ever hoped it would be. I’ve started my little companion piece on the soundtrack.

Yeah, I mean the typos in your reviews are already phenomenal, if your monitor went out and you couldn’t see what you were typing, you just might send poor Mr. Fink to the crazy house.

That money is a donation for the continuation of this site. Heck, if it becomes steady enough I’d say get yourself a broadband conncection. Netflix is streaming video on a lot of their movies now and it’s part of your subscription.

  • John Doe

ps yeah I vote for Hawk the Slayer. I saw bits of it years ago and it’s hilarious espically when the elf machine guns his bow. (can’t figure out how else to describe it)

  • Horror Theater Video has a great website Ken, thanks for mentioning them. I see by their area code they’re out of New Hampshire – unbelievably beautiful state.

Scouring their Sci-Fi section one is struck by the sheer number of sixties bad sci-fi movies that never even made it to MST3K. A lot of these movies sound very familiar and were probably “borrowed” in terms of plot from many writers/directors. One has a plot that sounds just like “The Abyss.”

Anyway, my favorite was this one. I give it the award for Best Title:

    Earth Dies Screaming (1964)

Grim science fiction as an American test pilot returns to England and finds most of the population dead. Large robots with clear-domed heads roam the streets killing with their touch, then reviving the dead as eyeless zombies. Rare print.

  • Flakey

Until my financial situation improves I have yet not donated, but I would say that paying for the maintainance of this site (and its bandwidth) is a very acceptable use of donated money.

  • I concur completely with the sentiments expressed previously– the money, once donated, is yours to use as you see fit. Goodness, if I’d known you had bandwidth payments in arrears, I’d have ponied up more just for that!

I second the request for a review of Hawk the Slayer. I’d review it myself if I didn’t find it so hard to come up with a complete sentence…

  • Thanks again for the support, everyone. And I’d like to say “Thanks!” particularly to our old friend and associate Prankster, who just kicked in too. I’ll put that aside and buy something juicy during Deepdiscountdvd’s 20% off sale in November.

I do have, in fact, a copy of Hawk the Slayer at home, and will put it near the top of the review stack. Sadly, I probably won’t get anything major up before I leave to go visit Joe Bannerman a week from tomorrow, but after that, I promise, I will go to town.

Horror Theater Video is a pretty good site, and generally reliable, their Aatank DVD notwithstanding. Again, you have to be conversant with gray market standard, but they generally meet these, and sometimes their stuff is quite good indeed.

Ed mentions them sellling Earth Dies Screaming, but let it be known that this title is among the plethora of MGM double bill Midnite Movie DVDs coming out in October. So save your money on that one and get it in a nice remastered professional copy, with another film to boot.

Flakey, I appreciate the thought, and certainly don’t want money from those who can’t spare it. I hope that day comes for you soon, but more as it means you’d have cash for yourself than for us.

Anyway, thanks again everybody. Be warned, though: I’ll probably be bugging you guys for more money when 2017 rolls around.

  • Thanks to Roger for kicking in some funds, too. And thanks for using Paypay rather than Amazon, which does eat less off the top.

I still like Chris Holland’s suggestion: Amazon should offer 100% of the tip amount in store credit, *or* the amount in cash minus their 10%. Either way they’d be ahead.

  • sardu

    Uhhhhh–

What’s that Paypal info again?? :D

  • There’s a Paypal tip jar thingie on the front page of the old site (Jabootu.com), or folks can just use my Paypal e-mail address; ken@jabootu.com.

  • Wally Ballou

“fragrently” for “flagrantly”? Wow – unless it’s a gag. I love your reviews, but I hope you can afford an editor some day (no offense meant). I will put something in the tip jar for penance.

  • David

I don’t know what you’re worried about. As far as I’m concerned, any expenditure related to keep the site up and running is legitimate.

  • Wally, if people tipped me everytime I had a typo, Bill Gates would be my butler.

  • Another donation from Harry P. (who must view the demise of the Harry Potter series with a small bit of releif). I’m currently putting donations towards that upcoming Sam Katzman set, so thanks!
