This is the future of films…

I mean, OK, it’s just a short. But look at the production values!! Ten years ago this would have been all but impossible. Where will the next ten years take us?

As mainstream studio films grow more and more uninteresting and unsatisfying, I fully expect a revival among independent film making. In a way, we’re seeing a replication of the factors that lead to low-budget filmmaking in the drive-in and then the early made-for-video days. And since this product will be aimed at niches by people largely making films because they want to make films, it will be passionate and smart and quirky and fun. I can’t wait.

A similar process has been going on in music for the last 10 to 15 years. People may grumble about the state of popular music these days but the last decade or more has been the golden age of esoteric, weirdo, nerd rock and I couldn’t be happier.

Kickstarter’s paving the way in this regard, too. There’s an all practical effects film being made starring Lance Henricksen I think called Harbingers, I believe. It looks too much like The Thing for my tastes, but it does show that the way things are being made, whether for films or tv or even games, is slowly changing. Possibly for the better.

I am a backer of Harbinger Wars and movies CANNOT be “too much” like the Thing for my tastes.

In terms of quality, no. Definitely not. In terms of story, it might be interesting to see something else.

This is coming from a man who still wants a direct adaptation of Who Goes There?, so take it for what it’s worth.

    I second that notion! :-)
