Letting Zygons be Zygons…

Terrific news! Of all the one shot wonders of Doctor Who, I imagine up near the top on the fondness scale are the Zygons, who’s sole appearance was in Terror of the Zygons (1975). I don’t know if it’s because they appeared in an early Tom Baker arc–perhaps the peak moment of popularity in the old Who–or because, let’s admit it, they used the Loch Ness Monster as a pet.

Anyway, to my massive delight, the Zygons are apparently due to return in the upcoming Doctor Who 50th anniversary special coming later this year.

Oddly, Terror of the Zygons STILL hasn’t been released on DVD here, the only Tom Baker adventure of which this is true. Rumors last year had it due for a release this spring, but no firm confirmation I’ve seen of a 2013 release. Booo!

  • I don’t know why, but for some reason I get the idea that he’s utterly PO’ed at someone just off screen. “Who’re you callin’ ugly, monkey boy?”

Then again, space con men love these guys. They’re such suckers.

Well they’re a human embryo crossed with a cephalopod- how can that not be cool? Looks like they just added more detailing to the same old great design, good call.

I assume the Loch Ness Monster this outing won’t be a hand puppet?

  • It’s also worth noting that a spin-off film called “Zygon: When Being You Just Isn’t Enough” was released in 2008.

Terror of the Zygons is scheduled to hit DVD in June in England, and I believe October in the US. It’s going to be the last of the original series stories to hit DVD, excepting any other stories that they decide to finish through animation. (Or if they find lost episodes to complete a story, I imagine they’ll release those too.)

I can’t describe how happy I was seeing this picture. With the Ice Warriors appearing later this year, we’ve hit all the monsters I really, really wanted to see save two: The Yeti (which by rights at this point really should be inevitable) and the Drashing. I have no idea on Earth how you could write a story around the Drashing, but they’d be sooooo cool to see again.

    The Rutans would be nice.

Crap! Forgot them. Yeah, they would be nice to see again.

    Also, the Tutans.
