AWESOME DVD NEWS!!!

I’ve written before on how much I love the studios’ increasing use of DVD box sets to provide for the release of films lacking the necessary commercial merit to justify an individual release.   Not only does this provide a mechanism for the release of much more obscure (but still beloved) fare, but often the prices are increadibly cheap on a per-film basis.

Coming out early in July are the previously announced four Warners’ “Cult Classic” sets, which will see such films as Queen of Outer Space (in widescreen!), Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Hot Rods from Hell being made available.

[Jabootu commands:  Buy these sets!  Or at least rent them from Netflix!  Especially the non-sci-fi one, becuase those can really use your support!  Again, support this initiative so that we get more of these sets!]

Now word comes, from the Creepy Classics website, of a couple of new such set for Halloween, including one of the most fervently lusted after titles by b-movie buffs:

At the CinEvent Film Conference in Columbus I ran into reps from studios that are releasing some classics for the Halloween season this year (Thank you Michael, Jessica and friends).  Three classic horror box sets are coming to DVD this fall.

One from Columbia and one from Fox. The Columbia set will include THE WEREWOLF (1956 with Steven Rich), CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN (1955 with Richard Denning), ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU (1957), THE GIANT CLAW (1957) and one other title to yet announced. The suggested retail price will be around 24.95.

They will not be released separtately. The Fox set will include CHANDU THE MAGICIAN (1932 with Bela Lugosi as Roxor), THE UNDYING MONSTER (1942, Fox’s answer to THE WOLF MAN), THE LODGER (1944 with Laird Cregar), HANGOVER SQAURE (1945, also with Cregar) and MAN HUNT (1941 with Walter Pidgeon, Joan Bennett, George Sanders, John Carradine and Roddy McDowell).

Finally Kino will be packaging some of their horrors in a new box set (all previously released on single discs).”

The Kino stuff was avialable before, so no big deal.  However…THE GIANT CLAW!!  Wah-hoo!  Seriously, everybody, buy at least one, or better both, or these sets!  If we support these things, soon films like From Hell It Came might finally hit DVD.

Oh man!! Giant Claw!! I’m sold! Totally picking that up! No more watching my ratty taped-off-TBS-last-century VHS copy! Joy and rapture!!

Yeah, I’m a tad stoked about that. :D

I need to track down that one with Queen of Outer Space…I’ve only seen part of it, but that part was something else…and the ceramic hand in 50 Foot Woman is a hoot, to boot.

Giant Claw! Wow! I’m buying that even though my budget isn’t the size of a battleship!

  • At long last, “The Giant Claw” on DVD. Words fail me.

I’ve been waiting for “The Werewolf”. I only saw it once and I’ve been waiting to catch it agsaain, ever since. The late Steven Rich was great. I remember him from various TV shows, as well.

  • By the way – I guess in order to compete with Blockbuster’s new sorry service, Netflix now offers “Instant Movies”. With over 2000 titles on hand (more to be added), those with a broadband connection can watch movies instantly on their computer. Even with DSL, it works just fine. Now I can watch “Raquel” wthout having to take up one of my DVD mailings (the mailings are not affected by this service). They’ll even let you know which movies in your queue are available for instant viewing. My limit is 18 hrs. per month (it’s based on the number of DVD’s at one time that you sign up for – mine is 3) – which is fine by me. Just another reason to subscribe to Netflix, in my opinion.
