Monster of the Day #537

Damn goth kids!

  • Holy crap, I was watching this last night!

  • Ken_Begg

Don’t know about the ‘holy’, but you certainly got the ‘crap’ right.

  • The Rev.

USA played this a few times late at night back in the day, which is where I saw it.  Very little to recommend it, although the ending is so batshit that it kind of has to be seen to be believed.

  • Beckoning Chasm

If memory serves, this is the only movie I’ve ever seen where someone was referred to as “Clarkie.”

  • sandra

It’s a movie where kids with black fingernails go around killing people by hugging them, but I don’t remember the title.  So is Evil Kids this week’s theme ?

  • Ken_Begg

How can you forget a title like The Children?! It just completely grabs you.

Yeah, probably, unless I can find four more monsters with black fingernails.

  • Flangepart

“No, really. His head was this big when I got through with it!”

  • Beckoning Chasm

“Hey, why did you take my credit card to order a movie on Amazon Instant?”

“I’m doing it for ‘The Children.'”

  • zombiewhacker

Speaking of which, Ken… has a certain Wolf Rilla movie ever made it as a MOTD?  I was trying hard to think but couldn’t remember.

  • Young Sean Cassidy  tells his mother all about Bela Lugosi’s one shot at playing the Frankenstein monster, but his halloween costume lacks a few details…..

Okay, based on the comments, I MAY have seen The Children long, long ago. My memories are so vague that I’ve convinced myself they’re wrong and I may be recalling a dream rather than something I saw on television. Was there a scene where a kid hugged his Grandmother or someone and they turned sort of dark and mummy-like? How vague are my memories? The only details I can be certain of were a white sweater and a cloudy, milk-like sky which had me convinced the picture must be British. Did I actually see this? (If so, thanks, Ken, for digging out a still, for now I’ll know what to look for as I’d be interested in seeing it again!)

  • Ken_Begg

Yep. Can’t remember when, but it was a while ago.

    “Beware the eyes that hypnotize.”

  • Ken_Begg

When they hugged you, you were basically microwaved. The white sweater is possible, but the film is definitely rural American. Pittsburgh, maybe? Somewhere on the east coast I think.

  • The Rev.

This is currently on Hulu Plus, for those that have that.

Maybe it’s just the approximately 2 decades’ worth of bad movies in the interim, but this was not nearly as bad as I recalled. I’m not saying it’s good: the acting ranges from fair to very bad, people get over family members’ deaths waaaay too quickly, the effects are backyard (though sometimes effective for their roughness), and a few characters pop up and disappear to no effect save to pass running time. However, it was a lot better paced than I remembered; my memory was that it took rather too long for things to get going, which was not the case at all. It’s got a few effective moments, including one “Holy @#$%!!!” moment that, even given the premise of the whole thing, was shocking. Sadly, I’d utterly flushed the memory of the final scene from my mind; it was completely stupid and pretty much impossible given what we’d seen prior. Therefore, I’ve decided the main character hallucinated it, after his night of horror and violence, and after violently shaking his head he realizes it wasn’t true, and the survivors go on with their lives.
