Monster of the Day #509

This week, on Really, Really Extreme Makeover...

You like it? You don’t think it’s too much, do you? Godzilla Jr says it makes me look “dope”.  At least, that’s what I think he said.  Is that good?

  • Flangepart

“Hey, It’s a gig. You try keeping up with alimony payments for Mothra…”

  • I always get a frill seeing Godzilla.

(I watched Ultraman as a kid, never did see this episode.  Some how I feel like I missed out.)

  • The Rev.

It’s a good episode, with built-in amusement from Jirass’ obvious origins, but also a pretty serious tone overall.  Ultraman’s fight with him at the end gets pretty cruel, though, which was not exactly an isolated incident, as I discovered when I watched the entire series last year for the first time.

Still, it was nice of Godzilla to job to the new kid on the block to give him credibility.

  • One of Ultraman’s sadder episodes.

  • bgbear_rogerh

     well if no Bleat, LOL.

I do not like the cone of shame

  • wallyballou

Indeed.  The bastid could have left an empty comment thread for us.

Well you guys can call it ‘The Gallery of Regrettable Movies’

Somewhat irregular reader of the Bleat for a year or so now, never posted in the comment threads though.

  • It took me a second while watching the episode to notice that it was the GHIDRAH suit’s body and the MONSTER ZERO suit’s head. That wasn’t a bad look for the Big Blue Dinosaur, and I wish they’d just left off the silly frill.

I’ve always been a little puzzled as to why so few of these shows made it to American TV screens, when most of the feature films DID get imported in one fashion or another. Knowing that Japanese faces and big rubber monsters means instant ratings bonanza with kiddies, I can never understand why AIP or whoever never imported more than a handful of such programs. I’d LOVE to see a dubbed version of Megaloman!

  • Godzilla, during the 1970s, experimented with a new look.

  • Flangepart

Jirass. Now there’s an unfortunate name.
Buragon: “So I told him ‘get Jirass outta here’, Hah I slay me…

  • I think they called him something like Kee-rah in the American dub, didn’t they?

  • zombiewhacker

So is the theme this week monster costumes that look like other monster costumes?  (Godzilla, Chewbacca…)

  • The Rev.

I’d read it was Sea Monster’s head and GvMothra‘s body.

I’ll pull out my DVD and listen to the dubbed version to see if they gave a different name.  I think you might be right on it being Kira or something like that.

  • Well, we’re both right about the suit pieces, since those suits were used multiple times. The body came from the suit built for GODZILLA VS THE THING, which was subsequently used in GHIDRAH THE THREE HEADED MONSTER with very minor alterations. I believe it was also used (with very heavy alterations) as the first giant monster used on Ultra Q, yet another series I wish we’d imported. The head, meanwhile, was built for MONSTER ZERO, altered slightly for GODZILLA VERSUS THE SEA MONSTER, and then sliced off and spliced onto the earlier body to produce this thing. (It must have been re-attached later, though, as the full suit was used for stunts in SON OF GODZILLA, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, and GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER.)

  • The Rev.

    Okay, yeah, that sounds right.

They did indeed modify a G suit for the monster Gomess on “Ultra Q.”
