Speaking of superhero movies…

…(referencing the item below, in which I reconsider the probability of their being an Avengers movie), I saw a commercial this morning for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.  Unlike the earlier movies–the first of which I actually though was better than Tim Burton’s Batman–this will be an animated, all CGI feature.

Here’s the thing:  If this makes a lot of money, and who knows, it could, would it perhaps pave the way for some bigscreen superhero movies that were also animated rather than life-action?

I know people who aren’t interested in seeing non-live-action superhero movies, but I think this could actually extend the life of the genre by offering something different.  Too bad they’re already making a live-action FF film involding the Silver Surfer and Galactus, because the storyline, with animation modeled on Jack Kirby’s original artwork, would be awesome.

Second runner up?  The story from Fantastic Four issues 25-26 (I think), in which the rampaging Hulk engages in a running battle with the entire Fantastic Four (including an epic mano a mano fight with the Thing) and the Avengers to boot.  Man, I’d pay a hundred bucks to see that, again with Kirby-informed animation.

I just caught the ads for that TMNT movie last night. Don’t know what to think…probably a rental unless it catches good buzz.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a love for the original live-action TMNT movie. After exposure to the craptastic cartoon, I was surprised by how dark and gritty it was (for a PG movie especially–not too many movies of that rating with explicit deaths and characters getting beaten into comas). After finding the original comics, I understood why that was so, but at the time it was a revelation. Still, it holds up on its own merits, I think. The fight scenes alone…damn that’s a lot of costume to be lugging around while doing spin kicks and backflips.
I need to find that on DVD. If it’s out, that is. My tape’s getting pretty old…
