Monster of the Day #492

The first truly iconic image of cinema? Quite possibly. Hard to believe this film is now 110 years old.

Few people knew Andy Kaufman has blind in one eye from childhood.

When the Moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.

I seem to remember that someone made a full costume of this a few years ago…unless I’m just remembering that episode of Futurama.

“I said ‘get me a a Moon Pie‘”

What is hard to believe is that when I was born the film was only 60 years old.

And when you fire back with a missile attack, that’s amore.

    Nuke the moon!

If the man in the moon started wearing an eye patch like a giant cosmic pirate the moon would rock!

  • “Once again, the police is asking citizens not to fire their guns at the moon. You may inadvertently trigger an interstellar war.”

  • Yes, but would this really qualify as a “monster”?

Also, I believe THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY came before A TRIP TO THE MOON, so I’d swing my vote of First Iconic Image of the Cinema to the cowpoke who fires a shot directly into the camera. Word has it the shot made many people dart from their seats in fear.

  • Ken_Begg

I thought of that, but I think that image is too generic. I’d have to assume more people in the general public would find the moon image familiar than that particular dude firing into the camera.

And c’mon, how is that *not* a monster?! It’s an entire planetoid with a face!

  • Yes, but it doesn’t menace anything. If anything, the moon gets menaced! He’s sitting there, minding his own business, then, POW, a rocket right in the eye!

On a side note, I believe I read that this short was filmed twice, so there are two versions of the exact same movie, but with slightly different details. I wish I could say where I saw this, it was in one of those big thick ‘film’ books from the 70’s. There were side by side frame blow-ups, including one of this image. Sure enough, there were slight differences in each.

It doesn’t menace anything?  Tell that to Larry Talbot!

  •  How can you not be menaced with THAT up in the sky… looking down… watching you…
