Go Speed Racer, go-oh!

Although this project has been bumming around for a least a decade now (back in the day Johnny Depp was attached to play Speed), it now appears that it will hit screens in 2008.  Just like The Transformers.  What a country.

Filming is now set, reportedly, to begin this spring in Germany, with the film being written and directed by the Wachowski Brothers (!!).  Hopefully they view this as a chance to not make a movie that’s About Something.  (Or maybe Spridel (Dicky Cheney) and Chim-Chim’s (Bush) getting into trouble after ill-advisedly climbing into the trunk of the Mach Five will be used as a canny metaphore for the War on Terror.)

No casting on Speed yet, but Vince Vaughn is purportedly producing the film, and may play Racer X (who, in an amazing twist, is secretly Rex Racer…oops, sorry).  Frankly, I don’t care.  Just don’t screw up the friggin’ car!!  And please, no more CGI than is strictly necessary!!

The movie was penciled in for a May 23 release, but that’s now where the new Indiana Jones movie is supposed to go, so I imagine that will change.

Why do I get the feeling Peter Fernandez will get a Stan Lee-ian cameo if this really goes through?

I had heard something about Owen Wilson being attached as Speed. If true, that wouldn’t bode well for a straight forward, non-ironic adaptation. These big budget live action remakes have nothing to do with the original shows anyway beyond the name to lure in the old-timers hoping for a nostalgia buzz.

They’ve been talking about a Speed Racer movie for years. In fact, I remember reading about a possible SR movie with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock about ten to twelve years ago, back when they were both still basking in the glow of Speed.
