Dino De Laurentiis Update…

There’s a small item on De Laurentiis, the Italian film mogul who’s made films with Fellini and a hilarious series of American big screen debacles back in the ’70s and ’80s.  At the at the age of , Mr. De Laurentiis is not only still alive, but still producing films.  The recent Hannibal Lector prequel is one of his, and he’s still pushing for an update of his old ’60s Jane Fonda film Barbarella.

What got my heart to pitter patter, though, was this:  “Then there’s the underwater epic about a killer whale…”

Apparently De Laurentiis has given up on making films that aren’t follow-ups or remakes of his earlier works, but the idea that he’s *still* trying to churn out a remake / sequel to his hilarious misfire Orca (1977).  In an ideal world this would finally be his one-time idea to team Orca up with King Kong (he produced the ’70s remake), but sadly I doubt it.  Even so, really, what the hell?  Jabootu blesses you, Mr. De Laurentiis!

  • Isn’t that a reference to the book ‘Meg’, about the supposed Megalodon?

  • Ken HPoJ

No, I don’t think De Laurentiis has anything to do with Meg, which would be about a prehistoric giant shark, of course, and not a killer whale.

Once Dino gets an idea in his head, he never lets go. Look at King Kong Lives, which came out a full decade after his King Kong. Of course, this is closer to thirty years since Orca, but what the hell? Go for it, man!

Oh, so Hannibal Rising is one of Dino’s. Well, THAT explains the 17% rating at RottenTomatoes! The man has a reverse Midas touch.
