Tonight on TCM…

Well, October is upon us, and TCM is doing things up right. Every Monday Night, starting tonight, they are showing a long slate of horror pics. Tonight’s offerings are (all times central standard):

7:00 The Horror of Steven King Not a documentary ON Stephen King, but one by him, surveying horror movies. Sort of a 60 minutes video version of Danse Macabre, presumably.
8:00 Frankenstein
9:15 Freaks
10:30 Repeat of Stephen King thing.
11:30 Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (March)
1:15 Mark of the Vampire
2:30 Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
3:45 Nosferatu
5:15 Phantom of the Opera (Chaney)

Next Week: Lots of Val Lewton, other older stuff

Good stuff the rest of the week:

Tuesday, 3:45 AM
Lady in the Lake An entire Philip Marlowe detective picture shot in POV. As annoying as it sounds, but an interesting cinematic experiment.

Wednesday Night
7:00 The Thing from Another World
8:45 It! The Terror from Beyond Space
10:00 The Curse of Frankenstein

Friday Late Night Cult Movies
(Following an 11:00 showing of Bullitt, by the way)
1:00 She Freak
2:30 Berserk Super crazy circus horror flick starring Joan Crawford and Michael Gough.

Thanks (as usual) for the info, Ken.

This is cool, because I had been kinda half mulling over showing my 12-year-old daughter “Freaks”, and here it is on TCM — awesome!

Ah! Nothing says October like Val Lewton movies!

The Wenesday lineup will be co-hosted by Robert Osbourne and John Carpenter. Looking forward to hearing Carpenter talk about these films.

For anyone wanting to watch She-Freak, I suggest you record it, fast-forward to the last minute, pretend you just watched Freaks up to the moment before the reveal of Cleo’s fate, then watch the last minute and try to figure out what the hell the carnies could’ve done to create the results you see on your screen. That last minute is the only reason to watch it, believe me; and it’s probably not worth the slog, especially if you’ve already seen Freaks.

Oh, and just so aren’t tempted to go back and try to figure out who the chubby guy in the pork-pie hat laughing maniacally at the end is, it’s the victim’s boss from her job prior to her carnival caper.

You can thank me later. Preferably with cash.

I watched the Stephen King special, nice to hear him mention The Changeling (1979) one of the finest haunted house movie ever made and a criminaly underated film. I remember Martin Scorsese also mentionning The Changeling in an article on his favorite horror films.

I am a huge Raymond Chandler geek. Lady in the Lake is indeed as annoying as it sounds, but is worth watching. My biggest beef with it is not the POV gimmick, but the actor who plays Marlow (also the director, if I remember correctly). He just doesn’t quite do it for me.

Am I the only one who thought She Freak wasn’t that bad? It’s not going to win awards or anything, but I enjoyed it.
