Monster of the Day #436

Well, done with Don Dohler now, so let’s move on.

I don’t know, that hairdo makes the Bride look a bit butch. Still, it’s clear he’s had some hare-raising adventures.

    Is that Humphrey Bogart?

  • Beckoning Chasm

I believe that is “The Return of Dr. X” with, indeed, Mr. Bogart.

  •  It’s his only Horror role.  It’s not a bad little picture, actually, though not in the least scary.

I’m guessing this was from the days before mad scientists and master villains chose cats as their pet of choice. Somehow rabbits just don’t seem to add much to a villain’s evil credentials.

  • Depends on the rabbit.  Having the Rabbit of Caerbannog as a pet would be impressive, to say the least…

In the original 1938 version of “Dexter Laboratory,”  Bogart played Mandark opposite co-screen legend Cagney in the title role.

you dirty rat, you contaminated my experiment

     With Lauren Bacall as DeeDee?

You do know how to press a button, don’t you?  You just touch it with your finger and push

  • Seems Like I’d heard Bogart was assigned the picture by the studio as a punishment for something, or putting him in his place, something along those lines (like how Paul Kelly found himself starring in THE SECRET CODE, which turned out to be one of the finest serials ever made anyway, largely due to Kelly’s presence). I believe Bogart was subsequently one of the founders of SAG. (Which has gone on to become the most ruthless union in the world, something I’m not sure Bogie would have appreciated.)

That said, I’ve certainly sen worse programmers than THE RETURN OF DOCTOR X. Also, despite the title, I’m sure we’re all aware this picture as no connection at all to the early Technicolor thriller DOCTOR X.

Hey , quit Borgartin’ that rabbit.

  • Beckoning Chasm

You know, I wonder if Genndy Tartakovsky DID base Mandark on this film….

  • bgbear_rogerh

It would make my day if it were true. You certainly have Dexter’s gloves and labcoat.

“How do ya like my hair, schweethart? Go it from Elsa Lancaster.”

  • By the way, I watched THE ALIEN FACTOR again, and at least a couple of good MOTD candidates got away….

Maybe that’s why Graham Chapman had that rabbit “fluffy”  in the BDA sketch.

Those skunk stripes do really exist- my sister has had one since she was 17. Never did anything about it either, wears it with pride.

What strikes me, though, is how absolutely perfect it looks in that shot. That is one damn fine hair cut- as Abe Simpson would say “one you could set your watch to”.

  •  Well crap.  I wish I’d remembered the BDA sketch…
