Monster of the Day #326

Nom nom nom. This scene was better when it was Bo Derek, though.

(And Rock thinks he’s soooo smart.)

UPDATE: Huh, forgot I reviewed this.

  • I’d like to think that I’m the only person who thinks that this is one of greatest movies ever made.

I’d like to think that to, and I do!
Still, A good early MST3K. About half way through, Joel and the guys just started laughing when Joel flubbed a line from the script.
A fun flick, If you don’t expect too much.

  • Flangepart

    P.S., the monster’s a leg man.

  • Ericb

    Stop that! It tickles!

  • roger h

Mrs. Sawashima, I thought you were Akiko!

I was trying to figure out how I missed this one on MST3K, it is from the “zero” KTMA season. I haven’t finished watching all of those.

  • You know, I’ve never seen any of the KTMA shows. I should buy a cheap set off iOffer.

  • Gamera

If only the sea monster had tentacles….

I think I’ve seen one episode of the first season of MST3K. Did it have a guy with black hair and glasses in the place of TV’s Frank?

  • roger h

re: KTMA: If I can find them (we are re-organizing much in the house), maybe I’ll send you a couple of episodes to help you decide if you want to buy the rest.

They are funny, not as many jokes but, the movie selection is pretty awesomely Jabootu. More TV movies and a Space:1999 2nd season episode.

  • roger h

Dr. Ehrhardt was played by an 18 y.o. Josh Weinstein (not the Simpsons’ Josh Weinstein), he also did the 1st season on Comedy Central. I assume he left to go to college.

He is now part of Cinematic Titanic.

  • Roger — That would be great, although please don’t put yourself out looking for them. If you come across them, though, email me at ken@jabootu.com and we can coordinate.

    Thanks!

  • Ericb

From what I’ve read Josh left MST3K (or was squeezed out) because of the decision to pre-write the episodes rather than improvise them. He never really jelled with the new format in the first season and was gone by the second season.

  • David Fullam

About the oddest Japanese monster movie ever made.

  • Gamera

    Ahhhh, Weinstein that was it.

    Thanks Roger!

I’m going to have to look into these myself sometime, as said I’ve only seen one episode.

  • roger h

Gamera, you don’t have to watch the KTMA MST3K episodes, you lived them:

    K04- GAMERA VS. BARUGON

    K05- GAMERA

    K06- GAMERA VS. GAOS

    K07- GAMERA VS. ZIGRA

    K08- GAMERA VS. GUIRON

  • I wonder if the Japanese word for pterodactyls must be “bird”. Look how they repeatedly refer to Gyaos as a “bird” despite the fact that it’s obviously a pterosaur of some kind.

I really wanted to like this, but man, too slow-moving.

I’ve only seen a couple of the KTMAs, but my faves are Superdome (a movie set before the Super Bowl), and Phase IV (a.k.a. “the ant movie”).

roger h said: “more TV movies and a Space:1999 2nd season episode.”

Actually, it’s two episodes, both featuring Mara, a female, alien version of Manimal. The first episode also features BRIAN BLESSED!

  • Gamera

I could have swore the Gamera movies had Frank in them till I looked it up and noticed that they re-did the movies in season three. ;) Which I have seen about a zillion times for each.

Seems I haven’t seen but a handful of episodes from season one yet the Comedy Channel used to rebroadcast some episodes over and over endlessly. Did they just not re-run the season one and two episodes much?

  • Ericb

Bad Brians themselves didn’t want them rerunning the 1st season. Not sure about the 2nd.

  • roger h

I don’t know the details but, there is also the issue of the movie owners not wanting to re-license their films for repeat broadcasts by Comedy Central. Money or not wanting their films made fun of.

IIRC “keep circulating the tapes” has its origin in this issue.

Best Brains. And, yeah, they didn’t want their first season re-aired. I don’t think the KTMA stuff was even shown on Comedy Central, so it was a moot point.

The Brains do seem to have eased up on the Season One stuff, though. They’ve released several of then on DVD. I’m hoping some day they’ll do the same with the KTMA ones, too.

  • Ericb

Oops. Bad Brains is the 80s black hardcore band.

  • roger h

I saw the best brains of my generation destroyed by Jabootu, starving hysterical naked dragging themselves to the TV sets at dawn looking for an angry fix. . .

  • zombiewhacker

By the way, the real reason Josh left MST3K is over a pay dispute with Jim Mallon. The whole “scripted-riffing” dispute was apparently a doctored explanation Joel concocted for the media.

Joel seems to be that rare showbiz personality who doesn’t think dirty laundry should be aired publicly.

  • Rock Baker

Hmmmmm, I wonder if I could do it twice. I nominate the sea serpent/octopus from Jack the Giant Killer for MOTD.

This was such a berserk movie! The “Legend of Dinosaurs” has to be Sandy Frank’s most surreal offering of all time (and think about that)!

I didn’t know you’d already reviewd this one, Ken. I was thinking of reviewing it myself, but now there’s no need! (Besides, I just posted a review of a Japanese monster movie, so I need to find something different anyway.)

  • Rock Baker

He’s got really nice teeth for a dinosaur, by the way.

  • The Rev.

I haven’t watched this in quite a while, but recall it being pretty boring. It really didn’t strike a chord with me.

A friend of mine won a recording of a KTMA episode online years ago. I don’t remember the movie, but it was the episode where Trace was gone so they had Crow frozen for most of the episode. That’s the only one I’ve seen. I remember thinking that if the other episodes from that time frame were of similar quality, I could see BB not wanting them shown much.

  • Gamera

    Wow, looking at this site:

    http://www.mst3kinfo.com/

I don’t even remember half the MST3K epsiodes on the SFC. They ran the first half of season nine and then started to repeat them over and over. I didn’t even know there was a second half to nine and a season ten. How the heck did I miss them???

I’ve got to get my hands on them somehow.

  • zombiewhacker
  • Gamera

    Hey thanks ZW.

I’ve started watching the ones I missed on YouTube. Figured it would be the simplest way. Gee, I forgot how funny the show was.

I am going to have to pick up the compilation of the MST3K Gamera movies though.

  • Rock — Don’t let that stop you. Anyway, it was not a super indepth review.
