Monster of the Day #254

Paintings I’d Like To Have In My House Week continues.

Is that a pug sperm whale?

  • The Rev.

I like the painting, but that whale’s eye is bugging me. Everything else is realistic enough that it really sticks out, and not in a good way.

  • The squid’s tentacle over the eye is supposed to be tugging at the whale’s, er, face, I think. Notice how the whale’s mouth is also opened more widely on that side.

  • sandra

Whales actually have been encountered with the circular scars caused by having had squid tentacles wrapped around them ( the squid’s suckers are razor-edged ), so whales not only fight Giant Squid – they win .

  • Ericb

The do more than just fight and win. Sperm whales prey on giant squid.

Wow, my eyes were bigger than my stomach

Looks like a sperm whale but, mouth wrong and it has an expandable throat like a Humback whale and I do not know what is up with the eye.

I am guessing we have a pretty good artist going from memory or this is based on the whale from Disney’s Pinnochio which also seemed like a composite imaginary whale.

  • Marsden

And the Sperm whale’s jaw is really narrow compared to their head, this guy is some kind of composite whale. Teeth look too big, too. But I can kind of see that the squid is pulling on the side of the whale’s face so hard his eye is bugging out, kind of holding your eyes open really wide with your fingers, sorta.

    Still a cool painting.

  • Rock Baker

Ah, yes, the peaceful tranquility of nature…

  • Zandor Vorkov

Is that … Monstro vs. the squid from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

  • Petoht

Hm. The eye and mouth of that whale makes me want to put a little word bubble with “Dude! WTF?!”

  • Flangepart

“When sushi eats sushi”. tonight on Animal Planet.
